We have been reading about the character Kenneth Sutherland for awhile now, The brother to William Sutherland Earl of Sutherland. Kenneth is the heir and he and his brother had to submit to Robert the Bruce. There loyalties had been with King Edward II of England. Kenneth now wants to become one of Bruce's Highland Guard. A phantom army created by Bruce and trained. Each HG has a specialized skill and Kenneth is being recruited and trained. He is sent on a mission back to England to spy on King Edward. While there he runs into the Mary Mar. Kenneth and Mary had a brief affair while she was on a mission in Scotland for King Edward. Mary is being held a prisoner along with her son David the young Earl of Atholl. Mary's husband John Strathbogie Earl of Atholl has been captured by King Edward and he has been put to death for treason against England. King Edward has Mary's son David taken away from her when he was just 6 months old. Now 13 years later Edward still has Mary under is control.
There are a few surprises in the story, even though I thought this was the way the story would go. Ms. McCarty trick me with her superb writing skill. Then the story reveals what I first thought was true.
The reason for 3 stars and the disappointment centers around Mary of Mar's character. She is written very similar to Isabella MacDuff from bk6 Viper. The two characters are much older heroines who have been married and separated from there children. Late twenty's are old for a lead character during this period of history. I like a younger more innocent heroine. Now on to Kenneth the way he is written It didn't seem like he was ready to become a member of the Highland Guard. He never listen to what he was told by his leaders in the Guard and lacks self control. However he does overcome these flaws by the end of the story. There is also, to many easily explained misunderstandings between the couple. Too much Angst making The Recruit less sensuous and less romantic then the other HG stories!!

I must confess that I was a tad weary of reading 'The Recruit' which is the story of Kenneth Sutherland and Mary of Mar. Kenneth first appears in 'The Saint' where he struck me as a volatile, over reactive jerk. However, in this book he has matured a bit and continues to grow into a likeable character until the end. Mary of Mar starts off as a sort of mousy woman in hiding. She has lost her husband, whom she married when she was 14, had her child taken away from her at 17 when he was six months old, lost her brothers and sisters (including her twin) during the war. She is distrustful of Kenneth at first because he reminds her of her first husband in many ways.
I could go on and tell you more about the book, but I do not want to give anything away. Suffice it to say that this is the type of book you want to read in one sitting until you find out how the whole thing resolves. The characters are likeable and interesting. I think it is a great addition to the series. I cannot wait to read the books on the rest of the Highland Guard Series. I think you will not be sorry to get immersed in it either.
