We have now had this cover for a little over two years. We started seeing the blue dots in our pool, and now we probably see thousands of them each time we use the pool. We had a similar cover in Phoenix where the sun is more intense and it lasted for many more years than this one did. We live in SoCal 3 miles from the ocean so it doesn't get too hot here. We only use it about 3.5 months of the year, and the rest of the time it's stored in the shade. I am going to see if I can get any money back due to the warranty.
Here's our initial review:
We bought one of these covers years ago for our old house, made by Solar Cell, and the data I took showed that it paid for itself in just a few pool uses. I compared the outdoor temperature to the pool temperature, and how much our gas bill increased to heat the pool to the temp we like (84-86) with and without the cover. The quality of the cover is excellent. The thickness makes it quite durable. I forget the dimensions of our old pool, but we cut the cover in thirds to make it easier to deal with.
We just bought one of these for our new house, and it arrived in 3 days, I think. It's the same quality as the one we had before. We shopped locally at Lesley's pool supplies, and the same blanket we paid $150 for on Amazon would have cost us about $250 locally. For our new ~19x38 irregular shaped pool, the 20x40 blanket worked perfectly and I cut it in 5 pieces.
I haven't bothered to take the data this time, but in its first use, it seems the pool temp was 6-8 degrees hotter than it normally would be. For this ~20,000 gallon pool, to raise the temperature 6-8 degrees would need to have the pool heater running constantly for at least 5 hours. I haven't gotten the gas bill yet, and I didn't look at the meter to see the before/after readings, so I don't know what the cost delta is, but I'm guessing I saved $20 easily and wouldn't be surprised if it was close to double that. So, in a few uses, we will have realized our payback.
I do have to mention that it took quite some time to unwrap the blanket. We don't have a large area to spread it out, so we had to do it in the pool itself, and the blanket kept sticking to itself in spots, and I was the only one working on it (two sets of hands would have been handy), so it took a while to stretch it out. I cut the blanket a bit larger than it needed to be at first, and then went back and trimmed it to fit better. Then I cut it in 5ths.
But now we need to buy some kind of shed to keep the blanket in when it's not in use. You don't want it on the pool year round if you don't plan to use it. Being in direct sun all year long will cause it to wear out sooner.
The product worked for 2-seasons, but definitely is not a 7-year product as advertised, and the warranty is worthless.
This is the 4th or 5th cover that I purchased for my 16x32 inground pool in 10 years of pool ownership and I can safely say that it is the lowest quality one that I have had, including one that cost $70 at a local overstock store. I keep the cover in the basement on the reel over the winter. None of my previous covers lasted more than 2 to 3 seasons - they never hold up longer.
There seems to be a manufacturing problem with the lamination process because the bubbles on this new cover are all collapsed and don't contain much air. As a result, my cover takes on water and about half of it floats below the surface, which defeats the purpose of reducing evaporation losses and heat loss.
But they do degrade. I live in Southern California and my pool gets sun from 7:30 am to sundown, so the cover takes a beating. The cover usually starts to shed the bubbles after 8-9 months and then it's time to buy a new one!
The price is so cheap that I don;t mind but I can see how others might find it annoying to have to replace every year ...
