Anne-Marie Levine's Reculer Pour Mieux Sauter is a thought-provoking work that melds history, art, family experience, identity, adventure, and poetry. It tells a story of the twentieth century and particularly the coming of World War II from an utterly fresh and unusual viewpoint. I have never before encountered the actual New York Times report on the day after Kristallnacht, here presented as a graphic art work...Reading it in light of all we know today is eerie and frightening, and it is just one of the small surprises that you will meet as you engage with this thoroughly unique book. There are more volumes of this work to come, but you should order the first one today and experience this brilliantly eclectic, synthetic, and authentic story/artwork/poem that is at once highly personal to the author's experience and, at the same time, easy, warm, and inviting for anyone to find meaning in.

Roland Barthes coined the term biographeme. His model was the word morpheme, a word used by linguists to designate the smallest possible unit of meaning. A biographeme is a fragment that designates the essence of a life. Reculer Pour Mieux Sauter ("Your jumping will be better as you step back"), presents a succession of such fragments, and they capture Anne Marie Levine's life-- a life devoted to music, art, and poetry-- and also its historical, cultural and artistic backdrop. This extraordinary endeavor is a brilliant collage of traditional autobiography sustained by documents and illustrations. It makes for spellbinding reading, and it is the first of several volumes to come.

What a delight to read a book that is unlike anything you will find at large. I was so struck with thoughts of family legend and lore. It reverberates with the author's childhood memories. What a contrast of life and death. Themes so often represented in mainstream works, here presented in a novel form. Ms. Levine reveals her ties to major events in world history as a family scrapbook. It raises curiosity around the later psychological impacts of her early childhood. Here's another reminder of humanity at its ugliest and its most beautiful. The dreams of childhood tether to today's reality. I felt the work a reflection of the author in so many personal, introspective ways. I have this melded image of her as an adult and as a child. I wonder how her family actually made it to America? What a journey. How lucky she is.

This book is unique and remarkable. Memoir, scrapbook, a book of poetry and a window onto a past world that should not be forgotten. An examination of memory and trauma, seen through the ordinary and the extraordinary in the life of a single family. The message is both obvious and subliminal, and viewed from a myriad of points of view and philosophical stances. Somehow the whole has an emotional impact that belies the simple words and images that dot the pages in a calculatedly haphazard fashion. One is brought up short and moved to tears.

This is clearly the beginning of a longer book, and one can only hope that future installments will appear expeditiously.

Quite apart from the interest this book holds for those interested in Portuguese Holocaust hero Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the entire concept is fascinating. How appropriate to retell a life with the bits and ends that we never know quite what to make of, but which we know are significant.
