How Do I Properly Start My Torch Kit?
Starting with everything off and closed (Propane tank and needle valve) slowly crack the knob of your propane tank about ¼ to ½ of a turn. This will provide plenty of propane flow, depending on the level of propane in your tank, to provide a large usable flame. Next, you need to wait about 5-10 seconds for the propane to fill the hose. You will then slowly crack your adjusting needle valve about ½ a turn, and then proceed to light the torch. Following this procedure (also listed in your torch kit's instruction booklet) will prevent the safety valve from engaging and prohibiting your use. If you find that you have turned your kit on too quickly, shut everything off and give the P.O.L. safety feature time to reset (about 1 minute). Hint: Neither the tank valve nor the needle valve on the torch needs to be opened all the way to get a usable flame.

Inside the directions was a yellow flyer - IMPORTANT NOTE. The gist of it is if you turn the valve on too fast an "Excess Flow P.O.L." device is triggered that limits flow.
The next time I lit the torch and squeezed the trigger it was like a jet pack - huge rush of flame shot out 10-12 inches. WOW - this thing really does work!
The main reason I bought it is for my gravel driveway. Spraying "RoundUp" chemicals only works 3 months out of the year, when it is above 90-degrees, not windy, and not going to rain for 24 hours. This torch has none of those limitations. Plus the $100 a year I spent on spray is now no longer spent. It cost me $12.81 to fill the tank. I did my driveway in less than an hour and still have half a tank left.
I highly recommend this thing - if you are having trouble with yours be sure you are not a victim of the protective device. Also the funny reviews here about zombie killing and flying off the ground will make perfect sense after you get one of these. It's very impressive!
Bonus: Awesome bonfire starter... neighbors all want one now.
On the pro side, it produces alot of heat. There is no need to scorch the ground where the plan is. Once it wilts, it will die in the next few yours. This tourch produces more heat than is needed to do the job.
On the con side, it is hard to keep a 400,000 btu flame for large jobs that take more than a few minutes. The problem is that so much gas is being removed from the tank so quickly that the tank becomes cold. As it cools, pressure reduces. I never had the flame go out but the heat produced is drastically reduced. Yesterday, it was about 75 degrees out and the dew point was near 75 as well. After 10 minutes of use, the tank was sweating hard as it was colder than the dew point. As I kept using it, the flame dropped, the tank cooled more and I had a layer of ice in the tank that was pretty significant. I let the tank rest about 30 min or so. When I reused the tource, the flame was almost back to normal.
Improvements: It would be nice to have control on how much BTU power you pull from the device. Maybe modify the handle or add a jet to get 50,000, 100,000, and 200,000 btu settings. I bet if you can make this adjustment, tank cooling would not be as big an issue and you could maintain a consistant flame longer.
