Product Description

Red Dwarf: II (DVD)

Boldly going where no one in their right mind would ever go, this popular cult sci-fi spoof takes you on a joyride three million years into the future. Those ubiquitous anti-heroes of space travel - Lister, Rimmer, Cat and Kryten - are coming to DVD for the first time ever!

The second series of Red Dwarf was, as Danny John-Jules says in the accompanying DVD commentary, "the one where it really went good." First broadcast in the autumn of 1988, these six episodes showcase Rob Grant and Doug Naylor's sardonic, sarcastic humor to perfection. The cast had gelled and the occasionally erratic tone of the first series--which was made a little too much in the shadow of Dark Star and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy--is replaced by a confident assurance that the show's mix of sci-fi in-jokes and gags about bodily functions really does work. There's more color this year, too, as the drab sets are spiced up, a little more money has been assigned to models and special effects, and the crew even goes on location once in a while.

"Kryten" introduces us to the eponymous house robot (here played by David Ross), although after this first episode he was not to reappear until series 3, when Robert Llewellyn made the role his own. Then in "Better Than Life" the show produced one of its all-time classic episodes, as the boys from the Dwarf take part in a virtual reality game that's ruined by Rimmer's tortured psyche. Other highlights include "Queeg," in which Holly is replaced by a domineering computer personality; the baffling time-travel paradox of "Stasis Leak"; the puzzling conundrum of "Thanks for the Memory"; and the astonishingly feminine "Parallel Universe." --Mark Walker

...and its about time. Join the continuing adventures of the crew of the Red Dwarf; Dave Lister (the ship screwball and slacker and the last human being alive), "Holly" (the ships computer), Arnold J. Rimmer(a holographic representation of Lister's deceased bunkmate), and "Cat" ( a humanoid who has 'evolved' from Lister's cat while he was in stasis for 3 million years) as they meet "Kryten", an android who will join the ship as a regular crewmember in season 3, survive a stasis leak, and travel to an alternate universe!!

Seasons 1 and 2 are available Feb 25th 2003, and two seasons will be released every ensuing February until all eight seasons have been released.
This is the funniest television program ever made in my opinion, and I am sure you will enjoy it!!!

Odd, sometimes predictable, but I loved it. It always made me laugh.
Only got to season 4 before Amazon yanked the free shows and I am not paying $2.00 to watch tv.
So I give 5 stars to the show, 3 stars to Amazon.

I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in following the series on a continual basis. The more you watch the programs, the more you see the symbolic links and how well the episodes follow the original book. If the viewer pays close attention, the viewer can learn about what and of whom the actors are referring amongst the episodes and appreciate the vastly creative scripts, photography, environmental backgrounds, even clothing choices which make up the character -- particularly for the wonderful Dave Lister. And, what is superb about Red Dwarf is that none of it is perfect or slick or predictable like the rehash of Dr. Who. Red Dwarf has adult humor, history, subtlety, drama and pathos. It dares to see things differently and it challenges the literacy of the viewers mind. All the actors contribute to the story line. Red Dwarf II picks up where Red Dwarf I has introduced itself as what it is and where they came from to the audience and moves forward with great enthusiasm, including the introduction of their first mechanoid. If you watch a variety of comedy, you will see certain spoofs, whether meant deliberately or not, from comedians in the past -- which is delightful. I cannot stress enough the great acting by all the actors in defining their roles on such a small stage in such a vast universe.

If you like the idea of british sci-fi comedy then this is right up your alley, Like most british tv shows, there aren't many episodes, but the ones that have been made, they are very good. If you like Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, you will love this. If you get this and like it and have not seen Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, buy it too.

It's a great show and it was one of the main shows we wanted to see on Amazon Prime Watch Now. Unfortunately Amazon seems to have changed Red Dwarf to a paid service, while we were only on season 3! Lots of other TV shows that we had in our Watch List were also converted to a pay for view service. I'm about ready to drop Amazon Prime at this point.

this is an old favorite of mine and I was very excited when it remained available on Prime after it left Netflix... And then just a couple weeks later... Poof, gone from Prime too! I would recommend buying the DVDs since they have extras and may well be cheaper than "buying" a subscription because who knows when you won't be able to stream your supposedly purchased video via Amazon.
