Disppointing End to Red Faction
on December 9, 2012
In case you haven't heard, this is the end of red faction. The company THQ which makes it is there no more large-scale plans of furthering the franchise. Best I can tell, Armageddon wasn't received that well. Personally I liked it a great deal in the whole lot of fun with it. I was can apply this downloadable content a while ago, but changed my mind and recently ended up getting it for essentially free. It's kind of a long story, but no I didn't pirate anything.
The deals is sort of a set of random missions that weren't in the main game. You start off fighting a mission playing as a bad guy trying to take down the terraformer. The next mission has you fighting for the good guys as a tank commander. The last couple of missions are as Mason. In the first you're trying to take down towers with an orbital gun. In the last you're fighting a boss who's trying to kill you. All told, it'll probably take you maybe a couple hours to beat max.
I do want to state that I enjoyed the levels themselves. It was also nice to have a couple of new weapons which were pretty effective. The problem lies first in its being too short to really enjoy the weapons that much and the second is difficulty. I was playing on normal and to give you an idea I was able to stand up to a five man squad using shotguns at close range and only damage maybe 20% of my armor. Even fighting the surprise end boss of the game, I don't think I ever went under 50% armor. Except for some one-hit kills, I never died once and the game was just insanely easy. If you do get hurt, the enemies mostly just stand in their area and don't move so you can escape, let yourself auto-heal, then come back and chip away at them. Repeat as needed.
If you've played and loved red faction Armageddon, it can't hurt to get these for a couple of extra levels, but just make sure you get it very cheap. I mean really cheap. Again, red faction Armageddon itself is a great game in my opinion have never regretted buying it, but it's just the DLC is a little watered down.
Please do go out and buy other THQ games like Metro 2033, Saints Row The Third, Company of Heros, or their truly awesome Warhammer games like Warhammer 40k: Space Marine, Warhammer Dawn Of War, and Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II + Retribution. The company is hurting for money right now and they're one of the only truly great ones left since Blizzard was acquired and went to the darkside embracing the heavy hand of overly oppressive copy protection. If you want to see them stay around now is the time to support them!
