It's a pretty quick read, but the characters are well-developed and the author does a good job of taking the standard greed-drives-all-bad-things motive and mixing in just enough fantasy to keep the pages turning.
It's a fast-paced story set in an usuusal circumstance featuring an unusual - if initially unwilling - hero. I liked the action, the characters and the entire book.
It's a great, easy read and I'm looking forward to more from him.
I was flipping through pages as fast as the pace in book, sometimes at breakneck speed.
Great character development but with enough ambiguity to expect more from Gunner in the following books.
Overall a great read and an awesome debut for Mr. Baird!
And in doing do, they smoked, drank, and used guns. This is the spirit of Ian Fleming's James Bond books, though sadly, not the movies.
The Red Jade Door takes place after World War II, when "Gunner" Quinn, jazz enthusiast and ex-soldier, is pressed by the CIA into travelling down to Guatemala to investigate a missing Myan Codex and the mysterious men who may have stolen it.
Five stars for doing what no one else is doing these days.
