Review
"...a dazzling folk/punk/jazz hybrid." -- Paste.com
"...celebratory and joyous..." -- Buffalo News, September 21, 2008
"...lush and elegantly recorded... . It is among DiFranco's best records... one of the only singer/songwriter albums to really push the envelope in new directions in 2008." -- Allmusic.com
"Feminism, strength, individuality and introspection all come through... But it seems some of the room in her writing that was reserved for political and societal anger has been taken up by the happiness she's found..." -- Associated Press, September 29, 2008
"a 12-track festival of folk, rock, and funk tied together by her sharply astute lyricism and wit. ...gorgeous." -- PopMatters.com, September 29, 2008
From the Artist
"When I listen to my new record, I hear a very relaxed me, which I think has been absent in a lot of my recorded canon," Ani explains. "Now I feel like I'm in a really good place. My partner Mike Napolitano co-produced this record - my guitar and voice have never sounded better, and that's because of him. I've got this great band and crew. And my baby, she teaches me how to just be in my skin, to do less and be more."
About the Artist
Ani DiFranco has written hundreds of songs, played thousands of shows, captured the imaginations of legions of followers, and jammed with folkies, orchestras, rappers, rock and roll hall-of-famers, jazz musicians, poets, pop superstars, storytellers and a martial arts legend. She's "fixed up a few old buildings" and minimized her carbon footprint before it was trendy - from installing a geothermal heating and cooling system in the renovated church that her label calls home to using organic inks on all the t-shirts she sells. But nothing she's done in her 18-year career has garnered more attention than a business decision.
Since Ani bucked the major label system in the early-`90s, opting to release her music on her own terms, the self-described Little Folksinger has been the subject of all kinds of hyperbole. She's been called "fiercely independent" (Rolling Stone), "inspirational" (All Music Guide), "the ultimate do-it-yourself songwriter" (The New York Times), etc. As the cracks in the music industry get larger and more big-name artists follow Ani's lead - Radiohead, Madonna and Nine Inch Nails among them - maybe people will just start calling her "smart."
As important as Righteous Babe Records is to the singer/songwriter/guitarist, she's more than happy to trust like-minded people with the business and revel in the complete artistic freedom it provides. On her new album, Red Letter Year, she takes more advantage of this freedom than ever before. Conceived, sculpted and refined over the course of two years - a lifetime compared to a typical Ani recording session - the album is an impeccably crafted, multi-layered sonic achievement.
And while the extra time is a big reason for Red Letter Year's captivating musical depths, the people in Ani's life play an even bigger part - her partner and co-producer Mike Napolitano (Joseph Arthur, The Twilight Singers, Squirrel Nut Zippers) and her one-year-old daughter Petah Lucia (gurgling, infectious laughter, wide-eyed innocence). Love, family and home are three of the album's most prominent muses, resulting in a dozen songs that exude warmth and renewed vigor.
For several years to come, musicians will be making headlines as they jump the major label ship and take charge of their own destinies. Having been there and done that, Ani DiFranco will be more than happy to just sit back and make art.

Ani está por encima de estilos y toca Folk, pop, rock y crea ambientes realmente densos para que sus composiciones tomen una calidad extrema. Imprescindible
"All This" is also a fantastic song. But they all are. :)
If you like Ani, I bet you'll like this album.
What these lame brains would like is for Ani to be the Ani of 1991 and to never dare to be different in her new pursuits. What is truly sad about that is that they are missing some truly brilliant and often times complex musical pieces. Red Letter Year is the epitome of what I just described.
This album is deep, dark and profound. Being a transplanted New Orleanian, this album can only be truly appreciated by those who have a genuine understanding of what happened, and continues to happen, in New Orleans. To knock it, and specifically to knock the lyrics, as I've seen some "critics" do, is to simply do as most Americans have done over the last 6 years, and really over the last century, which is to claim that they love New Orleans, but in reality despise everything that New Orleans truly is. Ultimately, all I can say to those people is Kiss My Grits. We're used to it.
As to Ani, she only gets better with each new musical venture. This album is best listened to with open ears and an open mind. If you don't "get it" then you're far more out of touch than any of us could have imagined.
From first listen I was so sold on this album, Ani in her utter brilliance released the album for free on her website ([...]) so her fans could embrace, devour and dissect her latest incantation to the goddess. The first song is sets the tone for the album. Hardcore fans will note that she included a live version of this song on her 2007 "Reprieve (Bonus Version)" album, but the studio is masterfully crafted and delivers a whallop of poetic genius.
I think Ani is ready to make it to the big time, mainstream success, this album is jam packed with promise. It drips with a kind of passion that we only have heard in little packets previously from this folkish siren. I mean, sit down and listen to "Alla This" I recommend headphones and a glass of wine. She is speaking volumes in an orchestral anthem of freedom, free thought, and self salvation.
I saw ani recently when she played the Cain's Ballroom, here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she was amazing. For some artist (sarah mclaughlin comes to mind) motherhood sorta seems to be restraining to their creative flow but, ani seems to flourish in her new mommy duds. Both on the record and live Ani delivers the goods on "Smiling Underneath" which is a textured layer of of relentless ear candy.
I will admit I am an Ani fan through and through. I loved her from the first time I heard her sing "As Is" from the "Little Plastic Castle" album. She has never failed to impress me both in concert and in her albums. For my sisters who have left the Ani trail due to her escapades into heterosexuality I beg you to give "red letter year" a chance. You won't be sorry.
