I hate the word "fan"!
We are Rush "connoisseurs" and I was in the local CD store when I stumbled onto "Red Star". I didn't even know that it had been released. Since we have all the imports, singles, videos, and CD's...I just KNEW that my husband would LOVE it! After one drive in the car, he promptly told me that it was the worst thing that he had ever heard (and we have some off-the-wall selections in our CD collection). He informed me that he would NEVER listen to it again.
My curiosity was killing me, so I did the unspeakable...I listened to a few tracks.
Have you ever seen a grown women cry as blood dripped from her ears? Shoot me now!
All of the negative reviews are right on target and all the positive reviews are made by individuals who obviously don't understand what it means to be a Rush "connoisseurs". It is something that the "true" Rush lovers take very seriously. You either "get" Rush OR you don't. If you do understand Rush, then you own ALL the albums (you call them that too...not CDs), you know all the lyrics, you know who the stage crews members are (because you read every word in the CD jackets), you stand in line for those perfect tickets to concerts (and YOU know that Rush is a LIVE band).
Rush followers are also, primarily, musicians. We musicians are the ones who actively listen to Rush and understand the complexity of their songs and that they have talent that cannot be surpassed by most.
Saying all that...."Red Star" is horrible! I hate that I provided these bands with some of my hard earned cash.
The only positive (and this is a stretch), is that it is one more item in our house that can be added to our Rush collection (even though it will never be played again).
Do yourself a favor and DON'T torture yourself.
It is not a tribute, it is a terrible mistake!
As a long-time Rush fan I almost found listening to this CD sacrileges'.
Why would anyone dumb-down Rush's music in this way? The death-metal "vocalists" sound like they're gargling with broken glass. (My daughter actually thought they were trying to sing like the Cookie Monster!)
If you ever wondered how Rush's music would sound stripped of it's integrity, this is the album for you.
I found there was actually one track on this CD that made the purchase worthwhile: Freewill. The vocalist covering this track just nails the very high "cell of awarness" line. That kind of power and range has to be respected. Accordingly, I give him three stars for that one note.
Rush is a revolution and true believers will scream it from the highest mountain the best way they know how.
A fun cultureshock for y'all will be Exit..Stage Right , a String Quartet Tribute CD ( they even have YYZ!!) add these two to your Rush collection and have fun with yet another way to experience that which IS RUSH!!
Dont worry about these guys trashin Rush, it can't be done!
Besides, Rush makes 'em sound GOOD. So turn it UP and lets ALL enjoy what Rush is capable of! Rock On!!!
