Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* One wintry day, a red tow truck’s driver receives a call that a school bus is stuck in slushy mud. He drives Red Truck up the slippery hill, past the other vehicles that can’t quite make it, to haul the school bus to the top. As the intrepid rescuer speeds up a slope, the words read, “Can Red Truck make it UP the hill? Red truck CAN! / Red Truck WILL!” Strong, flowing lines and highly simplified forms create a certain retro look in the digital artwork. Color used with restraint makes the red truck, yellow school bus, and brightly dressed children show up brilliantly against the background of whites, grays, and pale greens.  As Red Truck struggles up the hill, the perpetual smile on its bumper transforms into a grimace of concentrated effort, but it resolves into the familiar uplifted curve when the job is done. With a well-crafted text spiced with sound effects, this appealing picture book is highly recommended for reading aloud to the truck-loving crowd. Pair it with perennial favorite, The Little Engine That Could. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Carolyn Phelan

This is the best purchase I've made in board books for my son - and I buy a lot of books for him. It's by and large the family favorite.
The simple yet lively text draws in the readers and the sound effects like ZOOOOM and SPLOOOSH and VROOOOM have my toddler giggling every time. The storyline is great and the illustrations are just perfect! He loves pointing our every truck and bus in the book!
And to be honest, I LOVE reading the book. It's just plain fun - and I don't find many, if any, books too be this fun to read. I can't wait until the next books come out.
The board book is a good size and is very sturdy. Perfect for my little toddler to flip through the pages on his own.

I checked this book out of the library for my 2-year old son, who has a fascination for anything with wheels. He immediately took to it so much that I simply had to buy a copy for him after returning the library copy.

The text is simple and lively, with several sound effects throughout, like SPLOOSH! and VROOOOM! Even better are the illustrations by Valeria Petrone, who I find to be a delightful children's illustrator. We've since checked out several other books drawn by her, but none have been quite as charming as Red Truck.

Start up RED TRUCK!

This is one of my sons favorite books, we have so much fun reading it. We are always so excited when red truck saves the day! I have a group of friends who all had sons within 3 months of each other (3 of the boys where born only hours apart) buying that many gifts at a time can be hard on the check book, so we picked our favorite book and sent out 4. All of the moms gave this book a thumbs way up! One mom told me she read it 4 times after it had been delivered, another told me it was her sons new favorite book and that she was reading it morning, noon, and night. One of the boys had taken to sticking it in the back of his pants and taking it everywhere he went. This book is definitely a winner, even my daughter loves it and enjoys joining in for the sound effects "Zoooooooom!".

Red truck is a tow truck.
A work truck, not a show truck.

This book is charming. The art is very well done and enjoyable to look at. Big, vibrant vehicle colors against starker backgrounds make things pop and feel good on the ol' eyeballs. Some of the wording could use a tad more polish, though. However, the sound words are fun for the little ones to join in and read aloud. My 18 month old son loves when we get to the "Zoooooom!" page and always dramatically exclaims, "Zyoooom!"

Zoooom! Sploosh! Vroom! When a bus is stuck in the mud, only one truck is strong enough to pull it out. Red Truck to the rescue! Your children will love this entire series about working vehicles. Mine did. As an added bonus, they'll be learning the names of the colors--plus having a rip-roaring good time.

Our family business is a wrecker service. Red Truck is a perfect book for a two year old whose grandfather and uncle drive big red wreckers. He can relate not only to the pictures, but to the story of a Red Truck that rescues the children on the school bus that can't go in the mud. Our whole family loves to read this book to Buck.

One of our very favorites!! Just so so cute and simple. About a sentence on each page, the perfect length overall. I love board books that can tell a short simple cute story without being only three pages long (or 20). He loves the simple illustrations, a very great addition to our little library.

My 2 yr old son is a little obsessed with tow trucks (really any car/truck/train). He hated sitting down to "read" books until we picked him up some vehicle/train board books and since then he LOVES to read with us. This book has become one of his favorites and he asks us to read it all the time. Any book that can hold his attention through the whole book is definitely worth it!
