‘The Red Turtle’ is Dudok’s first feature films, and if not prepositioned by Studio Ghibli to create it following the success of his short film entitled ‘Father and Daughter’ he would have likely been satisfied making short films for the rest of his life. After taking a year-and-a-half to write the script (in addition to designing the basic story board on paper) the schedule for the animation period took approximately twice as long as the typical European feature due to the size of the crew recruited to do so
(For reference, the animation period for ‘TRT’ took about two years to finish and would take a larger crew approximately 10 months)
Initially Dudok intended on drawing the entirety of ‘TRT’ on paper, but he decided to use TVPaint software on Cintiq tablets due to the creative freedom it allows. The exception to this are the backgrounds as they were drawn with charcoal on paper (that were then colored in Photoshop) and the turtles that were modeled and animated using computer-generated imagery. This balance of traditional and modern method toes the line between fantasy and reality: with the film score, color palette, and smooth rendering capturing the Beautiful ( but sometimes destructive) relationship between man and the natural world.
In addition to having no dialogue ‘TRT’ gives audience members no opportunities to familiarize themselves with expositional material. Viewers are instead trusted to make inferences regarding insights and emotional states of mind with character development being both transient and wildly open to interpretation. Dudok’s story is centered with a tranquility that is interrupted by an anfractuous harmony which is made possible by the environment in which it occurs. What results is a pace that for some might be frustrating - as it is rather meditative in comparison to other features - that captures the essence of the overarching context with a magnificently graceful intuition.
Despite its subject elusiveness - ‘TRT’ is far from pointless or irrelevant in terms of its target audience and subliminal messages. Introduced to a character that remains more-or-less a stranger as he trails along, their refusal to just lay down and die encourages him to make the best of an otherwise unideal situation; hidden within the folds of simplicity is an ode to isolation and loneliness - or, rather, the combative nature of togetherness and a sense of community. Perhaps more importantly, ‘TRT’ exemplifies the cyclic nature of an otherwise unexamined life, and it makes for a meaningful and soothing adventure above all else
Being the first film made by Studio Ghibli outside of Japan makes ‘The Red Turtle’ a calculated risk (and then some) that has resulted in a crushingly beautiful feature that is equal parts modest and Majestic. Its absence of verbalized discourse could otherwise leave audience members clueless in regards to what Dudok is trying to say with a focused persistence, but the qualms as they relate to existence, mortality, and surrounding environments transcends with universal claim and ultimately doesn't need to be translated.
I encourage everyone to buy this blu-ray. It's not slow-moving, as you might expect, but it's not hyper either. If you saw the movie Castaway with Tom Hanks, it has similarities at first. The scenes move along pretty quickly, often from a long shot with a tiny figure moving in a subtly animated landscape, to a tighter shot. A lot actually happens and it's a beauty to behold throughout. There's no dialogue, so it can be enjoyed by everyone of all ages, over and over again. Just tune out any distractions, like mobile devices, talking, etc.
Overall the film artwork is breathtaking, so it saddens me that the story wasn't as well-crafted.

It is beautiful, the story is powerful, the animation is gorgeous. No dialogue.
Deep and meaningful, a movie that will change you.
