When I first put opened the box... I was amazed by the construction and appearance of the boot. I then put the boot on and thought to myself that there is no way that I will be able to wear these boots. They felt terrible at first. The leather seam on the side by the arch of my foot seemed bothersome, the area by my toes felt very tight. The sole was flat with no arch support. I did a little bit of research and read that these boots will break in , and then feel much better. So I gave them a shot and wore them.
It took me probably 3-4 days before the boots became somewhat comfortable... after about a week the sole began to break in as well and I no longer noticed the lack of arch support. After the boots broke in... They felt great. I can walk and stand in them all day ( I'm on my feet most of the day, walking around on the job, climbing up and down ladders and so on)
This boot has made me love Red Wings... I will from now on buy red wing boots. The price doesn't bother me if the quality matches the price.. These boots are built to last, and will absolutely outlast several pairs of cheaper boots. Once the soles wear out ... I will have them resoled. I used to wear Doc Martens all the time.. but they have sold out to China and their boots no longer last. These Red Wings are actually of better quality than the original Doc Martens from years ago.
Cons: The boots do definitely run large. I cant knock the rating for this because the description does say that they do run large. Red Wing claims that they are .5 size large... and that this is so that you can fit an insole into it... like Dr sholes or something. At first I thought I was going to need insoles however at this time I am still happy without them.
I actually think the boot might be closer to a full size larger than normal... I usually wear a 12.5 or 13.. so I ordered the 12. After break in.. The boot does feel slightly large however it is summer time and I am wearing thin socks. Fitting thicker socks in the winter should not an issue.
I did give them a good application of Hubberd's shoe grease that I applied with a hair dryer, and worked and flexed the leather a bit with my hands especially around the area on the back of the ankle, which helped the leather loosen up and begin to flex better. Today, I am on my fourth full day (not in a row) of wearing them and they are very comfortable now. (I just spent the entire morning standing out in a pumpkin patch, and they felt great.) I do not have any pain anywhere while wearing these. On another note, I do have fairly high arches, and these boots do not have the best arch support, which is nothing a good insert cannot remedy.
Quality is great. In the past, I had worn a pair of Red Wings my mother bought for my father back in the sixties, and these boots are every bit as well made as those boots were. The leather on these are thick (which may be why so many people complain about the pre-worn in comfort), and the stitching good. The soles are nice and hard, though not as hard as the vintage Red Wings I had worn, but that could be a product of the rubber's age, and may have absolutely nothing to do with the overall durability of the sole.
Last, they look superb.
