I purchased this book along with about a dozen other children's books about the American Revolution to read with my 4th grade child. I'm not sure what prompted me to buy the book -- I had not heard of it before, and it does not treat one of the more famous subjects that books for young students of the Revolution typically focus on, such as Paul Revere's ride.
However, the book was one of my child's and my favorite books out of the whole bunch that I purchased, and the reason for this is quite simply that it is a great story and it is very well illustrated, making the book a very satisfying visual story-telling experience overall.
Finding out after the end of the story that the story is in fact true and that it was passed down through nearly a century's worth of family members was icing on the cake.
I encourage you to buy this book and to spend a terrific evening together immersing yourselves in one real-life family's small but important life during the United States' earliest days as a country.
