Ryker is now well into his twenties and has lived his whole life thinking that he was responsible for the gun battle starting. His little friend, Sparrow, was killed as well as several others, including the sheriff.
Ana lost her parents in a car accident. She was raised by her grandmother and was now living in a place where she the only place she has to sit is a lawn chair and her bed is an air mattress. When her grandmother dies, she discovers that her grandmother had a house in Fury, Colorado and had willed it to Ana.
Ana was going down in flames. She had no money and no prospects. Her graphic design business wasn't taking off like she'd hoped it would, she was evicted from her apartment, and now her grandmother was gone. Taking the small amount of life insurance her grandma had left her, she moved to Fury and into this house.
Ryker wasn't much better off financially. His brother, Silas, was overseas in the military and his other brother, Decker, had been adopted after the shooting when he was a baby. Ryker is selling almost everything he owns to make enough money to keep paying the private investigator who is supposed to be looking for Decker. Both Ryker and Silas believe that their parents would have wanted the boys to stay together.
When Ryker meets Ana, he isn't nice to her at all. She fights back. She eventually hires him to help her get the house fixed up and make it livable. Sparks fly in another, better, way and changes the paths of their lives.
I have to be honest here. I don't like the bird stuff. I have no aversion to birds at all, but I just didn't like that the people in the story named themselves after species of birds. I don't know why. I just didn't like it. I love the name Ryker and I loved the names of other characters, but the bird thing just didn't work for me.
The story itself, however, was quite good. I thought it dragged a little in areas, but it didn't last long and it was off to the races again. It has a few editing errors that need some attention (Hannah was spelled Hanna at one time and there were a few instances of a word being put in the wrong place), but other than that, this was a pretty good read.
As Ryker returns to Fury he lives above the place where everyone died as a punishment to himself but nothing prepares him for someone moving into Sparrow's place. He wants this girl gone.
Ana Barrett has a degree in graphic design but is struggling to make ends meet and has just been evicted from her apartment when her grandma passes away and leaves her a house in Fury. Desperate for a new start she decides to fix up her new place but nothing gets her ready for her angry neighbour who wants her out.
When Ana hires Ryker the two form an uneasy alliance but the past has a way of coming back when you least expect it to. Can Ana and Ryker come to terms with their pasts to have a future?
Wow - this book was awesome and I loved it!
There are a few things that you figure out right from the beginning and you are just eagerly waiting for everything to fall into place.
I loved Ryker right from the beginning as I knew how much guilt he had over everything that had happened and how he blamed himself for everyone dying. It just breaks my heart what happened to him and his brothers and it explains so much about why he is so angry. He is seen as a bad guy due to being in jail yet when we learn why it's so understandable yet the Sheriff is out to get him but we know why and it makes sense why he is angry as well.
Ana was a awesome and I loved all of the comments that her and Ryker would make. I also really loved her friendship with Grace. Ana had no clue about her past other than her parents being killed in a car accident. Yet she was able to slowly put the pieces together and figure out who she was yet it came at a cost. I loved that she came to Ryker's defense with the Sheriff.
Mona was an absolute hoot and I absolutely loved everything that came out of her mouth! You never knew what she would say but I loved how she had put all the pieces together before anyone else! I can't wait to see more of her in the future!
I am so excited to see what is coming next in this series!!
