Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I am told that some authors are lucky; they empty their minds and their characters just appear a and tell them the story. Not me, unfortunately.  I always need to start from having something to say and the story follows from there.
The idea for this book came when I was living in Eastern Europe and came across remnants of the old corrupt system.  Small things!  You'd get pulled over for a minor traffic infringement and be offered a fine of 600 crowns, or 200 if you didn't need a receipt.  Or kids would, half-jokingly, ask how much it would cost them to be sure they would pass their exams. Sometimes you would get a whiff of something more serious: friends whose business had been burned out in mysterious circumstances or had been the victims of a dodgy legal process.
When I thought about it, I could see similar examples in western countries as well. Everywhere is to some extent corrupt. And it got me wondering.
What if the corruption became all pervading?  How would someone, a young woman for example, survive trying to make a life in such an environment?  And so I began to write this book.
