This tightly written piece set in a real San Francisco rarely seen by outsiders is chock full of humor and surprises mixed with intrigue enough to capture the imagination and keep those pages turning. The deeply flawed, but well-meaning corporate internal auditor Tanzie Lewis leads her coworkers on a fraudulent investigation of fraud only to run crash into a bigger entangled mess of misdeeds than she might ever have imagined. Aided greatly by her sister, the Sister, and her convent colleagues, Tanzie and her boss prevail to do good for business and the church through a book-long building of tension relieved only at the surprising ending. A great read.

The main plot involves two fraud cases and the internal auditor, Tanzie, who solves them. The mystery was fun and kept me entertained, but what I enjoyed the most was the relationship between the two sisters, Honey and Tanzie. When the book starts, Tanzie regards her older sister, Honey the nun, as a drama queen. Tanzie has “shed all things Catholic” and that includes her eldest sister. Communication between them has always been filter through the other sisters in the O’Leary family.

“As the silence grows, I realize that this might be the first time the two of us have been alone together. But, that can't be right. We've . . . well, we've had a buffer. That's what it's like being one of eight. Families are complex organisms more than they are about individual relationships. Your liver and your spleen get on fine, but you don’t judge that on how they work if you put them in a bag together, just the two of them.”

Tanzie views her sister Honey as a weakling, someone who ran away to the convent.

“Honey is an enigma to me. Her decision to cloister herself in a convent seems to come from another period in history, when women—Catholic women, anyway—had no options beyond marrying young and managing a brood. To enter the convent was a higher calling; yes, a calling, as it was described. A calling to give one’s life to Christ, to sacrifice, to suffer for the betterment of the rest of us. From my point of view, it was quite the opposite: To me, it was an escape from the real suffering that comes with living a life and being held responsible for one’s decisions.”

But as the story unfolds and these two women become engaged in solving a fraud at a homeless shelter, they come to understand each other much better. Tanzie realizes that her sister is a woman of enormous substance and character. I loved this book. Now I’m going to call my sister.

I never saw it coming!
I’m tired. Very tired. I’m tired because I stayed up all night finishing Redemption of the Cube Dweller. The first part of the story was charming and kept me interested, so I did my two chapter a night thing, and everything was fine. Then I hit the midway point and just couldn’t put it down! I wish I could go into detail but it would spoil the surprise for everyone.
I’m always reluctant to read books from unknown authors but a co-worker recommended this one to me. Who hasn’t been asked to read some self-published book from their Uncle Bob. So when my co-worker recommended this book, written by a CPA no less, I was a little on the fence. Not anymore. The story was fantastic on so many levels. The characters had depth and humor.
For example, her boss Sandy “Sandy is an odd mix. She looks like a Dallas glamour girl: all hair, teeth, and boobs—none of it original to the owner. She is stunning to look at; a tall drink of water, as they say. But when she opens her mouth, Sandy sounds like a hillbilly. She’s a peacock that clucks like a barnyard chicken.” But instead of being an airhead hick, Sandy is really smart and keeps Tanzie on her toes. Equally complex are Tanzie’s sister Honey, her childhood pal Father Spiro, and the diabolical Archbishop Mauriello. I want to keep reading about them. I’m going to miss Tanzie, Honey, Spiro, and Sandy.
I just ordered Revenge of the Cube Dweller, hoping it is equally captivating.

The Redemption of the Cube Dweller by Joanne Fox Phillips is the second book featuring Tanzie Lewis, an auditor with an imagination. It is a carefully constructed novel which weaves together the suspense of a corporate fraud investigation with the intricacies of Sister hood; both in a large family and in the Catholic Religious Order of the Sisters of Mercy. Ms. Phillips obviously has wide experience in the corporate world which makes the story educational as well as entertaining. Tanzie's relationship with her natural family is a study in sisterly intimacy,which gives the story its emotional depth. The Catholic Church and Tanzie have a complicated relationship which gives the story its appeal to anyone who was brought up in any religious belief system. Each of these divergent worlds is portrayed with authenticity, humor and even love. The weaving is a delight. A simple phrase often reveals an incisive insight. "Honey is well over six feet tall, and she carries herself with a kind of serene obviousness that I have never quite mastered. Not better than you but not concerned with your opinion either; Honey just is". The climax of the story which bring together the woven strands is beyond surprising, yet absolutely believable.

This second in the Tanzie Lewis series, Redemption of the Cube Dweller is out of the ballpark hilarious, lively, and surprisingly fascinating. Again, who knew that accounting was this compelling? It begins with surprising twists and ends in utter sweetness. I did not want to put this book down, but I forced myself to as I realized that I better savor each and every page and deep loud laugh! Once finished, I just found myself feeling lonely for all of the characters that had grown so familiar. I am longing for the next one to begin!

Great story, crazy (in a nice way) protagonist, Tanzie, and an interesting cast of characters of workmates and sisters and the rest.

Just like for the first book of the series, I love seeing my profession of internal auditor portrayed in a novel. I think Joanne just goes far enough in explaining the detail without getting too dull. It helps in this book that Tanzie has to explain things to someone who is a novice in the field (pun intended - what pun? Just read it, reader!) It's a classic author's ploy but it works nicely.

Joanne is a friend of mine and I had the enormous pleasure of reading an earlier draft. That has given me a great deal of insight into the whole process of working from an idea to a finished novel, for which opportunity I thank her. But also, having read and reviewed a variety of novels recently, some of which demonstrate such potential but which haven't been worked through or which rely on telling instead of showing, I really appreciate the well thought-through plot and the clever way information is revealed to the characters and to us. I'm not entirely sure I approve of all the actions that Tanzie takes but then, as she says, she's "a work in progress"!

A very satisfying story about fraud, both corporate and in a charity, and the internal auditor who unravels it. Written with the expertise of a CPA, CIA and CFE, you can forget that alphabet soup and enjoy the thrill of the chase. The work related elements are accurate and clearly explained - the protagonist has some difficulties with the Institute of Internal Auditors' Code of Ethics but could argue she is acting in the public interest. I have enjoyed seeing the character develop from the first book (Revenge) but two stories with her sisters is enough for me and I hope there will be less of her family in future stories - really looking forward to see how her potential love interest could bring an international perspective to future stories.
