This tale, however, was painful for me to read. I should have been alerted by the clumsy wording of the blurb, and by the quality of the writing in the sample, but I thought would improve. It did not. Awkward, lacking in dialogue, lots of telling rather than showing through the written word, and errors abounded. We are not told why Georgiana is Lady Georgiana-was her father an Earl or of higher rank? The same goes for her mother-in-law-because as the wife of a viscount, she would be Margaret, Lady Whatever, unless her father was an earl or higher. Granted, Ms. Prysock is not the only author guilty of this error. The writing was juvenile, with (lots) of (information) included in (parentheses) that looked like nothing more than editing artifacts. Except I do not believe this was edited by anyone competent. Skip it if you do not like errors in grammar, questionable courtesy titles and honorifics for characters, and stilted writing.
I had bought this book but did not read it right away so by the time I got to it I had forgotten that it was a retelling of the story of Ruth. So I was very pleased to recognize the story soon after starting it. Usually I don't care for 3rd person stories where they author tells us what happens instead of letting us see it happening through the eyes and dialogue of the characters but I didn't even notice that much of the first part of the book was 3rd person. It is such a great story I just loved reading it. Later the dialogue picks up as the author adds more Regency type things to the book. I was really pleased to see the translations of French phrases used by the characters included as footnotes. On my Kindle reader the footnotes don't come at the bottom of the page so they are a little out of place but usually I have to spend so much time looking them up on the internet to translate them it was a pleasure to have them included at all. The included Bible passages as introductions to chapters was really nice too. The applied directly to what was happening in the story rather than being random quotes or poems as are used in some books.
I wrote the author and suggested this would make a good book for a Bible study group and if she wanted she could write some study questions to be used in a future edition or a freeby on her website. I would also be good for a book discussion group and could be read in parallel with the book of Ruth.
The story of Ruth is one of the great love stories of the Bible and the author did a great job of setting it in the Regency period. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a better understanding of God's love for his children or just wants to enjoy a nicely written Regency love story without all the filth so many of today's authors want to include.
