He wound up telling his troubles to his friend’s mother, accompanied by a large number of beers. She had been having her share of troubles too, and they wound up making love. Afterward, she made him promise not to tell her son. And she insisted he sleep it off before he left to drive home. When he wakes up again, he finds her dead in her bathtub.
This book is part murder mystery and part coming-of-age tale. Matt at first must consider whether he may have killed his friend’s mother without knowing it. It turns out that there was another death in his past for which he feels himself responsible – his cousin, who, along with Matt and his friend Travis was part of a happy-go-lucky trio of good friends until he drowned in a lake on a summer trip.
The list of possible murder suspects is long, and once Matt has decided he didn’t kill Crystal himself, he sets out to cover up the fact that he was ever there so that Travis won’t find out that he made love with his mother. But things get worse and worse. Matt then feels he must cover up for his father, when it turns out Crystal was the woman his father was having the affair that caused his parents’ breakup with. Still later, he suspects for a little bit that it was his mother who killed her.
Great characterizations, and a complicated trail of evidence before the detective assigned to the case can completely decipher what happened that night, and before the other characters can make their way through the lies, cover-ups, and long-held secrets to come to a better understanding of each other.
This is a great mystery story that will suck you in on its rollercoaster of twist and turns and leave you asking what just happen. I’m glad I got to enjoy this story and can’t wait to see what is next for Ms.Susan, because if this is what to be expected then I will not be disappointed.
