Darcy told Nate in the first book that deep down he really didn't want to kill his best friend but he felt like he had to because of his duty to the clan and that Nate didn't even realize this himself that was the reason he left Gabe in the bottom of the ocean thinking he would die but deep down hoping he wouldn't.
Gabe allows Nate to live in the end and tells him to stay away from Him and Darcy and Nate promises to do that but the guilt he felt for fulfilling his duty caused his Psyche to have a twisted thinking that maybe he could relieve some guilt if he killed Darcy's sister because he didn't promise to leave her alone.
For Nate a lethal shark shifting Assassin the job should have been simple and quick, his target an easy kill but when Sophia turned that light on and he saw her he had a spark of emotion that stunned him and he hesitated giving Grace time to knock him over the head. Darcy; Sophia's sister, was the only person he sorta had a friendship with that he was capable of having as a child growing up. I think that was one of the reasons he hesitated killing Sophia and when he awoke and saw her and was conflicted and didn't understand why he hesitated.
Nate had multiple opportunities to kill Sophia after that pretending to be a friend but the attraction he felt for her caused him to not be able to do it. They see each other for awhile and Sophia wants more but Nate keeps a distance and she can't understand how he could kiss her the way he does and then be so cold after but he is a cold water shark after all!!
Sophia was a smart woman who knew exactly what she wanted and she had wanted Nate since she was a teenager and was crushing on him. She was taking the opportunity she was given to go after what she wanted even when she knew he was a shark shifter and an Assassin.
Nate is the Heir to the leadership of the Shark Shifter clan who are deadly Assassins. Nate has no emotions he is cold as a fish as they say! Sophia stirs an emotion Nate has never experienced before.
This book is a romance paranormal with a twist of the unusual Shark Shifter. I wanted to read it just to see how a shark shifter actual is and I wasn't disappointed. If you like romance, humor and paranormal but without the gory details of vampire novels you will like this.
I love this authors way of writing, it's current and fresh and the subject matter is different. I mean, who'd have though shark shifters would grab your attention? It's make believe but also believable.
Nate's character is very much the alpha assassin but there's also the softer side to him, the guy he wants to be, not just the trained killer but the one that has a place with another. Someone perhaps like Sophia?
In the first book we saw the side to him that he didn't want people to see, he was hell bent on killing but when it came to the crunch , he just couldn't do it. After that he became embarrassed, he believed he'd gone soft, so what better way to get revenge, than to kill the sister of the one he couldn't. Except that doesn't work out quite so well, as the story will tell you.
This second book is a fantastic instalment. It again has all the elements of the authors writing in the first book and features another hot alpha male. What's not to love? I cannot wait for the third book, I'll patiently await it but secretly curse the author for not writing quicker!
3.5 stars but rated a 4.
First off I did want to say that it ends in a HEA. I have mixed feelings. I had a lot of issues with Nate. He's a pretty diabolical man/shark shifter. Why he decided to go after Sophie to "get back" at Gabriel is beyond me. I understand he was upset and had some issues of his own. He was angry but I dont know, that part of the equation going after Sophie didnt make a whole lot of sense. I accepted it though because in his mind killing Darcy's sister would hurt Darcy and in turn hurt Gabriel. However, he kept saying that he was friends with Darcy and hated to lose her as a friend but wanted to off her sister? He's a complex character and perhaps too complex. He didnt know what he wanted. He was pretty cold to Sophie. It was hard for me to buy that he even liked the girl. Even in the end I wasnt feeling that emotional connection he supposedly had for her not like he should have for someone being in love. His character was flawed and I dont think it quite worked how it should have in this book. I do have to give credit to the author though. I liked this book better than the first. Only because it was more developed story wise and there was more of a Paranormal element in it. A lot will enjoy the book and thats fine. I didnt hate it. If the author wants to invite me to read the 3rd book I will happily because I DO like her writing style. Not everything comes together and there are just characters we dont get on with. :)
Admittedly, I think I liked “Betrayal” better. I was expecting more of a showdown in “Redemption”, which I suspect is coming in story 3, but at the very least, I did expect Lexa to put up more of a fight.
Overall, this is turning out to be an interesting trilogy and from the little snippet I saw of story 3, I can’t wait until it comes out. *Many thanks to the author for sending me a copy.
