Among budget ball heads, the choices have compromises to contend with. Whether it is the finish, action, smoothness, it comes with the territory. At these prices, it isn't going to compare to a model that is in the $300+ range obviously.
I'd called the distributor of Redged and they relay it is a Netherlands based company but didn't specifically say where this was made nor does the box. At the price of $63, hmm. Anyway, it is packaged nicely. Finish is par for what I would expect from this price point. Not to rough though not meticulously done, consistent thankfully. The outside has grooves machined for placement of large O-rings to aid in gripping the head, this is helpful and a nice touch.
The internals of the head allow free movement. Smooth well, this is like buying sheets, your perception how a 200 thread count and 600 thread count may feel to you. There is no lubrication applied to the ball socket so it does not feel silky smooth. Out of the box, it is metal on metal but it doesn't bind. The ball and internal surfaces will/should smooth out with use.
Working in a confined area between the camera bottom and tripod can be limiting if having to make full or multiple turns to the head controls. It takes 1/4 turn to fully disengage and firmly lock the action. You can quickly and easily make changes and be back shooting. This is one aspect I really like about this head.
Some event where your rig will take a dive into some sandy-ocean hazard will motivate you to want to disassemble it for a thorough cleaning-lube. The manufacturer has a threaded base and it has been epoxied in. Cleaning it will not be an easy option unless you want to break the epoxy bond. This would have been a nice plus to have easier user accessibility.
The platform base is simple, it is threaded on with the camera mount. It is easily removed if you desire to use an after-market QR base.
I have no way to test the manufacturer claims though it holds the 300/4 and everything lighter on the 5D-C-MkII. The compact size and lightweight is a plus for the spec'd weight holding capabilities.
It you want a basic head that has quick lock-unlocking and can live with the slightly coarse ball feel, this is a consideration.
