Soldiers on Mars investigate a bombing

'Redline' by Neal Holman with art by Clay McCormack and Kelly Fitzpatrick is a graphic novel about an out of control soldier investigating a crime on Mars.

Denton Coyle is a soldier on Mars just trying to get by. Then a bomb goes off in a crowd and Denton and his guys start investigating. They don't have very clean hands, and their methods are a bit unorthodox. Before long, Denton realizes that the bomb is linked to something in the past.

I almost gave up reading this, and perhaps I should have. It's over the top, kind of gross and the main characters are kind of unlikeable. Maybe I'm just tired of this kind of cynical story. The art is passable, the story feels like it doesn't really care.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Oni Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Gritty sci-fi setting, excellent writting, great visuals

I picked up this comic on a whim at a local comic book store. I'm glad I did! The writing and story are really excellent -- far and above typical comic book writing quality, in my opinion. I enjoyed the sci-fi setting and world building, the gritty characters and dialog, and the art is also great! The art style certainly compliments the tone of the story. It's a quick read but well worth it.

Without giving too much away, the comic is a detective story set on Mars, and follows some soldiers on a sometimes off-color investigation with intrigue and creative, but not ridiculous, world building. It's printed on heavy stock comic paper, not the flimsy newsprint-like stuff. It will definitely stand up to some passing around so loan it to a friend when you're done.

Dark, Funny, and A Little Gross: You're gonna love Redline!

This book is amazing. A cynical, darkly-funny take on sci fi and life during interplanetary desert warfare, Redline twist and turns and burps its way through a thoroughly entertaining story of conflict, betrayal, and stomach issues. If you're a fan of FX's Archer, you'll love the writing (the author is the art director for the show!), and the art is gritty and expressive, and features the most disgustingly well-drawn >REDACTED< I've ever seen, not to say I've seen that many. Trust me, you'll know it when I see it.

This is definitely a book for fans of war stories, detective stories, sci fi, humor, and for anyone who's ever shamed themselves for chuckling at a fart joke (looking at you, ENTIRE WORLD).
