One of TIME Magazine’s 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time
The book that inspired a legend—the first novel in the beloved, bestselling Redwall saga.
Welcome to Mossflower Wood, where the gentle mice have gathered to celebrate a year of peace and abundance. All is well…until a sinister shadow falls across the ancient stone abbey of Redwall. It is rumored that Cluny is coming—Cluny, the terrible one-eyed rat and his savage horde—Cluny, who has vowed to conquer Redwall Abbey! The only hope for the besieged mice lies in the lost sword of the legendary Martin the Warrior. And so begins the epic quest of a bumbling young apprentice—a courageous mouse who would rise up, fight back…and become a legend himself.
Perfect for fans of T. A. Barron’s Merlin saga, John Flanagan’s Ranger’s Apprentice series, and J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series.
“The medieval world of Redwall Abbey—where gallant mouse warriors triumph over evil invaders—has truly become the stuff of legend.”

About the Author
A well-known radio personality in his native Liverpool--as well as an actor, stand-up comic, and playwright--Brian Jacques was the host of "Jakestown" on BBC Radio Merseyside. Ever the performer, Jacques was well-known for applying his acting and entertainment background to his lively presentations to legions of young fans at schools across the United States and England.
Brian Jacques was born in Liverpool, England on June 15th, 1939. Along with forty percent of the population of Liverpool, his ancestral roots are in Ireland, County Cork to be exact.
He grew up in the area around the Liverpool docks. His interest in adventure stories began at an early age with reading the books of: Daniel Defoe, Sir Henry Rider Haggard, Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir Thomas Malory, Robert Michael Ballantyne, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Kenneth Grahame. He attended St. John's School, an inner city school that had its playground on the roof. On his first day at St. John's, at the age of ten, he had an experience that marked his potential as a writer. When given an assignment of writing a story about animals, he wrote about the bird that cleaned a crocodile's teeth. The teacher could not, and would not, believe that a ten year old could write that well. When young Brian refused to falsely say that he had copied the story, he was caned as "a liar". He had always loved to write, but it was only then, that he realized that he had a talent for writing.
Some teachers at St. John's proved to be good role models. As Mr. Jacques recalls:
"My favourite teacher was Mr. Austin Thomas. He looked like Lee Marvin. Big Man. A Captain in World War II. He came to school on a big bush bike with the haversack on back. He was a man's man. Always fair. I was fourteen at the time when Mr. Thomas introduced the class to poetry and Greek literature. (Because of him, I saved seven shillings and sixpence to buy The Iliad and The Odyssey at this dusty used book shop.)"
This interest in poetry extended to Wordsworth, Tennyson, and Goldsmith. It was also at St. John's that Brian met a teacher, Alan Durband (who also taught two Beatles, Paul McCartney and George Harrison), who, more than thirty years later would bring about a major change in his life.
After Brian finished school at fifteen, he set out to find adventure as a merchant seaman. He travelled to many far away ports, including New York, Valparaiso, San Francisco, and Yokohama. Tiring of the lonely life of a sailor, he returned to Liverpool where he worked as a railway fireman, a longshoreman, a long-distance truck driver, a bus driver, a boxer, a bobby (Police Constable 216D), a postmaster, and a stand-up comic.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2024I was a bit skeptical when I picked up this book, but I was tasked with finding some great fantasy reads for my grandson. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised.
At first. I thought this was just a kids book, and decided to give it to Connor with hopes he would enjoy a simple story with childish characters. Wrong! The story morphed into a thrilling adventure based on a young mouse on a quest to save his adopted friends. The characters are truly engaging, the bad guys are really bad, and the story's direction takes all kinds of interesting twists and turns. I am looking forward to buying the next one to read a whole new premise with many new characters.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2014Redwall is the first volume in a series of 15 books that Brian Jacques wrote for a group of orphaned blind children in Liverpool, England that was fortuitously published. It is stated to be for a youthful audience, but it is my experience that it holds charm for all ages. It is beautifully written, well constructed and the tale delightfully resolves so that the reader comes away pleased and reassured that the time was well spent reading the book.
The world of Redwall is good and caring, the way we would want the world to be if we could have an environment where those around us cared for the well-being of each other and those who were evil were well defined and doomed for defeat. The characters in Redwall are forest creatures from a mythical and medieval time. The scenes are set in an abbey and a forest. From there we are invited to follow the machinations of those who live in Redwall Abbey and those who try to destroy the tranquil life of those who inhabit the abbey.
I used the book with advanced non-native speakers for the charm of the book, the fast-paced plot and the delight of both the the characters and the well-written language. I question whether this series will go down as classical literature, but as Dickens has made his mark on English literature, I suspect that Jacques may well find his place in English literature also. There is also a video series on YouTube that makes it easier for students to follow the flow of the story should they wish to use it. t
Children find the story engaging; my students were equally delighted with the novel and I was pleased to find something that kept the interest of my students as well as building their vocabulary base.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2023I've heard about this book over the years. After book tubers (Merphy Napier) and podcasts (Worst Bestsellers) had talked about it, I suspected it'd be for me. Woodland creatures: check. Charming food descriptions: check. Just a little bit of battle and tension: check. About a third through I switched to audiobook because I just wasn't keeping pace, though I was happy every time I went to read. I'm so glad I did. The audiobook is so much fun. I think it's appropriately dorky. Love every accent. They're all so good! And I started it from the beginning too, so I got to enjoy rereading parts I couldn't quite place the tone of. The performances solidified that this book is a classic woodland adventure. There are anthropomorphic animals, there are heroics, there are goofy passages, there is very comical yet savage villain... It's got a lot of fun, if this is your thing. Don't like talking animals? You might want to pass. But if it's your thing, it's so much fun. I cannot stress how delightful the food paragraphs are. I can see my inner child playing pretend at camp and making a little mouse feast. It's just adorable. I say that, but there is some violence, but it's the kind that I think is expected of this sort of book. I don't think it's too gruesome. Anyway, highly recommend. I don't get a book high from audiobooks much. And I really didn't expect to want to continue the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2024Made a great gift for my bf who loved this book as a child.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2024TV Tropes called this "Game Of Thrones with furries", and I can see why. The story is all about a young mouse monk named Matthias and his search for the legendary sword of Martin the Warrior while his friends at Redwall Abbey defend their location from the invasion forces of Cluny the Scourge. However, the story seems more suited for children, as the violence level doesn't go beyond being PG-rated and it's devoid of the mature themes that are part of George R.R. Martin's famous book series. I recommend this to a younger audience that's looking for something similar to Game Of Thrones.

Mateus BarrosReviewed in Brazil on October 15, 20213.0 out of 5 stars Uma historia de aventura simples, ótima para quem esta aprendendo inglês

Cola for scale. I received it in new condition, but after reading the book the edges got a little worn.
I'm recently new to the Fantasy Genre and was recommended Redwall. Although it's recommended for ages 10-13, I am a late teen and I enjoyed the book immensely. The story is your typical normal guy (mouse in this case) who becomes a hero and fulfills a prophecy. But where this book shines is in its charming setting, loveable characters, and interesting world. I'll definitely buy more Redwall books and can't wait to learn more about the world.
