She finished the marquee and went into her office to check email. As she hoped, there was one from ‘ducksforever’, someone she had met online and started corresponding with. He noted that everyone in the town of Romance seemed to go crazy at Christmas.
Jack Nelson wondered who his email friend was. He knew it could not be Marianne Carter. He had seen the young woman at a town council meeting and would not have the extensive knowledge and vocabulary that his correspondent had. She must be an older person who worked in the back room of the theatre. He was here in town to make an assessment about whether the old theatre should be declared a historic landmark. So he couldn’t get close to anyone who worked for the theater who could influence his judgment. But perhaps he could press his pen-pal ‘Esme’ to give up some information? So he suggested in his next email that they meet for pie and coffee. And he even ended up having dinner with Marianne Carter when they ran into each other in town. With their lives tracking one of Marianne’s favorite movies, “The Shop Around the Corner”, it still didn’t occur to Marianne that “Duck Man” and Jack might be the same person – although she thought that she would never be that oblivious! Would this situation ever get sorted out for the two of them? Was there a future for them amidst the identity mix-up?
