Excellent Book! Five Stars!
January 24, 2013
"Reenacting the Way" by Dr. Paul Penley is an excellent book I strongly recommend to all Christians who are serious about their faith. Four reasons...
First, this is a practical book of action. Most scholarly books are just that - scholarly. Dr. Penley applies rigorous scholarship, but makes it understandable for the average person and always asks "so what?" It's not enough to know things, we need to live them. But how do we do that, especially with Biblical truths and examples that are sometimes hard to understand? Dr. Penley does a great job of showing how to convert historical background insights to action.
Second, Dr. Penley explains Biblical stories in the context of their time and place so they make sense. It reminds me a bit of Ray Vander Laan's "That the World May Know" video series, where Mr. Vander Laan showed and explained the context and meaning of Biblical events. From Reenacting the Way's first example -- the woman healed of bleeding (Matt 9:20-22) in Chapter 1 -- I gained a new insight into the meaning of what happened in that incident and why. I've read a lot of Bible commentaries about this and other events, but Dr. Penley added new insights, supported them by solid study and research, and expressed them in clear, understandable language.
Third, while I enjoyed the book as an individual read, this is really a book to read and apply together with a small group of friends/couples. I'm excited to read and apply it with my men's group!
Fourth, the book is worth reading for the chapter on Communion alone. My attitude towards this Sacrament will never be the same.
So I give it five stars. A fresh, impactful work!
