This is definitely a rap classic

I first heard of Talib Kweli when he came on Chapelle Show and I knew i had to pick up an album of his. I got the "Black Star" album first when it was him and Mos Def as a duo and whoa, there were some amazing moments there. I picked this album up after that to see if Talib could stand alone as an MC without Mos Def and Talib definitely brought everything and more.

The thing that's so amazing about this album is that there's a level of spirituality, positivity, and intensity that you don't hear much of in today's mainstream rap. It's an album that's actually touching and has a meaning to it.

The verses are about black pride some but they aren't racist, they're meant to inspire and be positive. No one should think this album is racist because they'd be misreading the messages that are really universal to people of all colors.

Aside from an ok intro and maybe one interlude that didn't work, this album is one of my favorite rap albums now. Talib more than proved that he's good on his own and on top of that, I think this is better than Mos Def's "Black on Both Sides" (and that was amazing).

Definitely buy it if you're a rap fan and you'll get songs you can connect to emotionally and be able to nod your head to.

solid album from a modern legend

I don't think that it's an exaggeration to call Talib Kweli one of the most important rap artists of his generation. Alongside his rhyming partner Mos Def and long-time dj Hi Tek, he helped blaze a new trail for underground rap in the late 1990s with the socially consciously, refreshingly old school vibe of "Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Blackstar." After listening to that album and some of Kweli's more recent material, I purchased Reflection Eternal's 2000 lp "Train of Thought" in order to gain a better idea of who Kweli the emcee really is. Fortunately, Train of Thought was very effective in conveying that.
Even though I believe Black Star still represents Kweli's best work, (and really, how could anyone top revelatory tracks like "K.O.S. Determination" and "Thieves in the Night"?), "Train of Thought", his collab w/ Hi Tek, is a good album in its own right. The rhymes are intelligent, the beats are engaging, and the listener is treated with insights into Kweli's personal life, and his deep passion for hip-hop. Kweli is freqeuntly labeled as a conscious emcee, but his flow is quite multi-faceted, and contains steady elements of humor and compassion. The cd features cameos from Mos Def, Rah Digga, and a very special guest.
I enjoyed almost every track but three standouts are "Memories Live", "Africa Dream", and "Soul Rebels"(w/ De La Soul). This album is wonderful and quietly inspirational; acquire it anyway you can.

Kweli & Hi-Tek are truly masters of their craft

I actually didn't get into Kweli with this album (2002), it wasn't until Revolutions Per Minute (2010) that I was captivated by the music and really began paying attention. Since then, I've continued exploring their work and it's consistent in its greatness.

Hi-Tek brings truly chill beats that just make you move. Kweli brings incredible lyrics and flow. This album, like every other I've heard, is masterful. It actually hits me on a level that makes me disappointed that I haven't been listening to this for years.

This is real hip hop.

It's A'ight.. but don't believe ALL the hype.

Rawkus Records has worked it's way into arguably the best hip-hop label on the map... That being said, I gotta say that while there are some tracks worth the price of this CD alone, I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed overall in this release. Talib Kweli & Hi Tek have in other efforts shown that they got the skills, but I guess that I was expecting something a little bit more groundbreaking with Reflection Eternal. I don't know... maybe seeing them perform live on the "Okay player Tour" a few days before I picked it up took something away from hearing it on my stereo. It starts off well enough, however I gotta say that the intro came accross more funny than powerful (it mainly left me wondering if Nelson Mandela really uses words like "chillin", and what if any was his cut in the profits)... but that's all good. The problem is that after the instant hit track "Move Somethin" (less than 10 minutes into the CD), the rest of the album mostly just kinda segues into banality. I'm not saying that it's whack, but it ain't all that either. The bottom line in my opinion is, that the plus sides of the CD make it is worth having, but if you had to be stranded in a deserted tenement with only 1 Rawkus CD, this wouldn't be the one I would want. For the first time buyer I'd recommend checking out Black Star first, as well as Mos Def's solo album Black on Both Sides (both of these blew me away from the moment I put the CD in, and kept it up for the duration). Compare and contrast both of these with Reflection Eternal, and I think you can see what I'm getting at. Peace.

Definitely my second favorite Hip Hop album all all of my 28 years of listening to the genre. Since this review Kweli hasn't put out anything this raw & organic. This album needs to be praised for every reason, Hi-tek's production, Lyrics, guest, art & Kwelity. Classic. If your're a fan of real soulful Hip Hop in the likes of the Roots, the Spooks & Common, you'll be in for a ear treat. You probably heard something from these artist so now pick up there hidden gem, don't give it a second thought.
