Review

I found the down-to-earth and practical reflections in Monsignor Richard Soseman s book, Reflections from Rome: Practical Meditations on Faith & Family, to be both entertaining and enriching. Our faith does and must touch every aspect of our lives and this book provides a wonderful insight into just how intimate life and faith can be. Taking a series of common encounters and experiences, Monsignor Soseman places them in a faith and prayer context so that we can all learn how to see, more clearly, God s hand in our own daily encounters. --Robert F. Vasa, Bishop of Santa Rosa

Like Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, for whose Cause of Beatification and Canonization he has labored, Monsignor Richard Soseman has sought to use modern means of communication in the service of the new evangelization. In these reflections, originally written as web logs, he draws on his experiences as a priest both in rural Illinois and in Rome to convey the truths of the Catholic faith in an accessible and appealing manner. May those who read the present collection of reflections be inspired and encouraged in the daily living of the Catholic faith. --Raymond Cardinal Burke

Visiting Rome many times over the years, mostly for church business, I have come to appreciate the flood of meditations and thoughts that surface from walking the streets of the eternal city and touring its religious and secular monuments. Monsignor Richard Soseman captures this phenomenon in a number of reflections that blend the deepest religious stirrings of the heart with personal experience and silent reflection that can serve to feed your own journey towards God by way of the paths of holy men and women who have smoothed the pavement for us. --Bishop Joseph N. Perry, Archdiocese of Chicago

I'm in my sixty's and don't travel much, but, Monsignor Soseman always will post beautiful pics of his travels, churches, makes me feel like I'm traveling with him! As well, what also is so amazing is when he takes your pains, concerns and intentions to Mass on Fridays and prays for you! Brings tears to my eyes! God love him! He truly is the Hands n Feet of Jesus Christ!

How do you write a great book review? Read a great book. In my opinion, Monsignor Soseman’s book, Reflections from Rome, should be placed on the top ten Best Seller’s list. In a world filled with turmoil, Monsignor Soseman allows the reader to hide out and find comfort through the positive ways he sees life. Monsignor allows readers to relate their everyday lives, dilemmas and cheers, to his very own tangible experiences. Each practical thought on faith and family is filled with the power of love, whether it be monsignor connecting us through memoirs of his large Moline family or the reminders of his many extended religious communities that he credits throughout. Walk through his love for the precious things in life such as his appreciation for nature and wildlife and countdown with him on the importance of food and its many enjoyments. This is a precious read which will find you reminiscing within and chuckling over the small things in life which most of us have in common. Reflections from Rome could be considered by some as an easy read that could be accomplished in a short amount of time, but my recommendation would be to savior this masterpiece story by story allowing plenty of time for reflection. Thank you, Monsignor Soseman, for writing this beautiful package of heaven that leaves the reader praying for more.

Msgr Soseman's muse is St Martha, Jesus' level-headed, down-to-earth follower, and he has no problem extolling the rock-solid Christian values he learned in the Midwest. Each of his essays can be read in tive minutes or less. They are wise and often quite holy without being preachy, written by a man touched with humility. How else can one explain someone who's been exposed to haute cuisine but can unabashedly admit to preferring homemade pizza topped with Velveeta?

Don't pass up this wonderful collection which can be read in order, or out of sequence without any loss. The brevity of these essays make them suitable for reading at any time of the day but may be most valuable as a morning offering or as an evening thanksgiving to the God who created so vast a canvas for Msgr Soseman to paint on with enthsuasm, warmth and joy. As another reviewer has said here, it seems as if he is speaking directly to readers. I'd further describe this books as an enjoyable conversation with a friend sitting in a comfortaable armchair across a cozy study on a rainy night, with a fire on the hearth and a warming libation in your hand.

Thank you, Msgr Soseman, for your spiritual pick-me-up!

This book is the product of persistent meditation and will inspire the same in readers. Msgr. Soseman interweaves everyday events and personal anecdotes with ancient traditions and universal truths, showing by example how the spiritual life builds on each of these elements. The book is suffused with a calm diligence and gentle zeal that challenge, inform, entertain, and inspire. A great companion in one's spiritual journey.

I open this little book of meditations at random every morning. Sometimes its message is clear right away ... Sometimes not until later in the day. When we follow St. Paul and "pray without ceasing" during the day, Msgr. Soseman's prayer finds its mark in our life. Every day! You will be amazed!
