"If personal testimony is any encouragement, perhaps I may be allowed to place my own on record. I recall, with great gratitude,a period in my later teens when I first became acquainted with the Westminster Confession, and began to study it with the aid of a commentary. Looking back, I think of that as one of the most valuable investments of time and thought I ever made. It took me a stage further in understanding the greatness of God, the glory of Christ, the ministry of the Spirit, the nature of the Christian life, the church and the world to come. I sometimes compare that time of study to the activity of a squirrel gathering nuts which will see him through the winter! So it has proved to be. Let Robert Shaw be your guide, reading him with careful and prayerful thought, discernment and appreciation, and you will know what I mean." (Sinclair B. Ferguson ~ Associate Preacher, St Peter's Free Church, Dundee, Scotland)
". . . one of the best written and helpful expositions ever to appear. From Of the Holy Scripture' to Of the last judgement' each category of doctrine is opened up with clarity and applied with warmth and spirituality . . . Originally published in 1845 and now reprinted again by CFP, this edition is enhanced by an introduction and foreword by Sinclair B. Ferguson. He says of Shaw: His work provides a minature course in theology. More than that, it explains, expounds and applies the whole gospel in a way that will explain the message of Scripture, illumine understanding, stimulate worship and strengthen Christian living.' . . . the value of the book is enhanced by the text of The Westminster Confession (together with Scripture proofs) given before each section is expounded . . . It is a handsome volume and is recommended highly." (Evangelical Times)

It may sound funny to have a commentary on a confession, but this commentary actually brings you back into Scripture to learn the biblical foundation of this great confession. In other words, Shaw concisely explains each paragraph/chapter of the WCF and also brings up more Scripture that teaches doctrine under discussion. In a helpful way he also describes some of the controversies and errors to which the WCF occasionally responds.
Along with a chapter on each section of the WCF, you'll find an introduction, an appendix concerning the WCF's approval, and a topical index. I do wish there was a Scripture index in the back of the book (the Scripture citations are listed in the written sections of the WCF). Perhaps if the publisher reprints the book, a Scripture index will be provided - it would make an outstanding book even better. Regardless, if you're looking for a brief, readable, biblical, and edifying commentary on the WCF, I highly recommend this book.
