Review

"Ms. Kantra is awe-inspiring in this sensual tale of two souls meeting their life mates. Splendid! 4 +" -- Bell, Book and Candle, RWA's 1995 Bookseller of the Year

"THE REFORMING OF MATTHEW DUNN is Ms. Kantra's dazzling debut. With insightful dialogue and tightly-written prose, she gives us an up-close and personal look at life on the streets. If realistic, extremely well-written contemporaries are your cup of tea, this is a must read. 4 +" -- Connie Ramsdell, Bookbug on the Web

"With a genuine understanding of deep emotion, Ms. Kantra gifts the reader with an exciting plot with just-right pacing. Her protagonists are complex and learn about love and loving the hard way, which adds a touch of realism to this special love story." -- Rendezvous, Oct 1998

A little shiver ran through Clare as she recognized Matt's brown-velvet voice behind her. She slowly turned around. No one could look as good as that voice promised.

He did.

He stood behind her, thumbs hitched in his belt loops, his broad shoulders encased in dark cotton and his black boots making a statement on these mean streets. Tug a Stetson over that dark hair and he'd look like Wyatt Earp taking on the bad guys in Tombstone. A rush of contradictory feelings washed through her, warm and confused.

The man was trouble, she thought. He was a danger to her work and a threat to her peace of mind. But his dogged adherence to duty compelled her respect. His understated humor roused her liking. And that voice of his was beginning to invade her dreams...

Clare moved into the "bad side of town" when her prosecutor husband was killed in the area while interviewing a witness. She's fighting to save the neighborhood children from gangs and crime by hiring them to work at her neighborhood vegetable gardens. Matt moves in because the police department is starting a neighborhood policing program and since he's a still-recovering wounded hero, his high visibility and limited duty make him perfect for the job.
He's not looking for romance. Neither is Clare, especially not with someone who gets shot at for a living. But Kantra makes the whole thing smooth as silk. It's believable, involving, emotional, action-packed, and just generally all-round wonderful. No wonder this book won Romance Writers of America's 1998 Golden Heart Award for Romantic Suspense before it was published.

As others have already said, this author's more recent series is better. I liked this story and although predictable, I enjoyed the way the romance evolved between the main characters. I think that the positioning of the characters in relation to each other made for interesting reading - tough, cynical cop meets do-gooder widow.

I so love the way this author writes. I've just started reading her books, this one and "The Passion of Patrick MacNeill". I loved both of them, but so far, "The Reforming of Matthew Dunn" is my favorite, but not by much. I loved Matt and Clare's story. This book will definitely go on my list of books to read again.

This was a great read. Clare' s husband was dead but she refused to let his dream die so she moves into the neighborhood where he was killed and begins to revitalize it. Unfortunately, the gang claiming it for their turf isn't happy with her work. Matt, a cop who was wounded in action moves across the street to start a new program for the department. He's determined to ignore Clare but pretty soon he takes in a stray dog, becomes a mentor to a young boy to keep him out of trouble, and finds him spending more and more time with the lady he vowed to avoid. Fantastic characters, sizzling love story and a touch of suspense. Highly recommended!

This is another series I read by Virginia Kantra. The MacNeils series was so good. This was actually one of the first series books I have ever read and I became instantly addicted. I then went to the Sweet Home Carolina books and devoured them as well. She has a great way of spinning love and intrigue together and really making people shine. I think anyone who reads anything she writes will agree.

I absolutely loved this book...it has enough of everything in it....dry humor that made me laugh out loud...a love story that makes a woman sigh.....enough tension to make it interesting....and the storyline was just what was needed to knit it all together into a really good book....I will be reading more of this author's books...

A story with a slight difference from the usual neighbourhood cop meets local girl. That's the basis of the plot, but the introduction of some sub characters with serious difficulties that affect both the lawman and the free spirited heroine gives the story its real substance. Matthew Dunn is weary of butting his head against the bad guys and trying to keep peace in a neighbourhood that has undercurrents of gang rivalry and crime. He comes up against a young widow with big ideas of honouring her dead husbands ideal of improving an area with more radical ways of change. The sparks fly, the exasperation level rises and suddenly it is all on between them. Enjoy! I did.
