Enough of the hive creatures are still together that the assimilation of Earth is going on, but there are those battling against it as well. Told from the perspectives of a being regaining his freedom and free will from the now defunct hive mind and of a teenager approaching the end of her juvenile hall lockup, Refuge is thoroughly engaging, exciting, and readable. I want more! Happily it seems the next book in the series is on its way.
As always with Author Gehrke's writing, the pacing, dialogue, and descriptive elements are strong components of this book. The alien creatures are just that, but there are enough touchpoints that readers can wrap their minds around the beings' wants and needs.
This book can be read as a standalone, but I am looking forward to reading the next one.
I love this writer's style and technique; the story pulls the reader along with dawning understanding--and a pounding heart in spots. I will be reading more of this author's work.
I especially loved how it felt like two separate stories were coming together to merge into one. It felt so right with other merging story elements. A fantastic start to a new series that you won't want to miss out on!
