Regarding Ruth (The Ruth Chernock Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
“Ruth!”
“Yes, good Reverend?” she asked, looking up at him from the straw mattress on the cold stone floor.
“You have been judged guilty of your crimes and you shall be hung by your wretched neck until you are dead.”
“Have you no mercy for me Reverend Jensen?”
“Woman I have none. Pray God that He might find some before this week is done. I shall see you hung on Saturday next.”
“Peter Jensen are you so pure of heart that you might judge me?”
“You will not test me woman!”
With that Reverend Jensen slammed the cell door closed and with a tick of the key in the iron box he locked it securely. His retreating footsteps echoed through the long hall, ending as the heavy front door slammed behind him. She knew that he would not return again until Saturday, when he would watch, with satisfaction, as she swung from the gallows.
In 1764, beautiful, young, Ruth Chernock was hung from the gallows at East Grantham, Maine. More than 200 years later her family speculated regarding the fate of their ancestor. Could she really have been guilty of such heinous crimes?
After digging through the attic and historical records of the old family home, the truth is gradually uncovered. Shocking family secrets are disclosed and at last the family learns the truth of it all.
This is a remarkable story of love, tragedy, betrayal and murder. The four books of the Ruth Chernock Series follow the family through the decades and generations. An incredible tale you will never forget!
The following books in the series are In Ruth's Memory, On Grace's Shoulders and Pink Sky & Mourning

The book is set in the mid 1700's and is about a small community during a time when fathers decided the man their daughters would marry. Women basically had no rights and were expected to cook, clean and have babies and raise them. Babies were born with the help of midwives and many women and children died during childbirth.
The story is mainly about Ruth and her life from the age of 15 or 16. The other characters in the book are well developed also and essential to the story.
I am starting the second book in the series and am glad to hear the next book is coming out next month. There will be four books in the series. That is a good number of books--not too long and not too short.
People will enjoy this book.
I loved this book. It kept my attention and I had hard time putting it down. There were times I felt bad for Ruth and then sometimes I wanted to hang her myself. There are many twists and turns in this book and those are wonderful in themselves because it keeps you guessing. In the end I was sad that the book ended and I am glad there is a sequel to this book. I would recommend this book to anyone that that likes historical fiction.
many situations she dealt with at such a young age. In the 1700's propriety was
beyond human understanding so when rebellion lifted its mighty head Ruth
did what she felt right in her childish heart.

Over the years I've read a lot of American historical fiction, and I know that life in the 1700's was brutal, often short and women were treated like property for most of the time. Ruth's marriage to Tobias seems better than some. He treats her with patience and respect even as she makes it obvious she loves another man. I was not sure how realistic this would be but in the end it does not matter. The language is beautiful and utterly convincing, with an accomplished feeling of the time and place. The story wraps itself around you like a homespun quilt, before attempting to strangle you with it's seemingly casual horror as the story unfolds.
I will be reading the rest of the series, as the characters are so compelling and I want to know what happens to them. This story is on a par with These Is My Words, one of my favourite American history novels. I tried not to compare them, but it was inevitable, and it did not disappoint.

By the time it finished I'd been back and forth between pity and disgust many times.
As Ruth's story progressed it provoked a lot of questions about society both then and now.
Following the hanging the story starts when Ruth was an innocent young woman of fifteen. The author carefully builds sympathy for the wilfull young woman excitedly looking forward to her future life with the man she loves, Teague. As events unfold that sympathy is increasingly stretched. Ruth's dreams and mental stability are damaged by the men who control her life but ultimately her actions are motivated by her own selfishness and jealousy. Strands of sympathy are maintained because while her actions are cruel and unforgiveable the author shows her reasoning as child like and suggests she does not really understand the implications of her actions.
The sympathetic portrayal of Ruth leads to the question if she was not wholly responsible for her crimes then who was? Her father, Tobias, Teague or society in general?
If these events happened today would Ruth have been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial? Would there be talk of depression and it be argued she was just as much a victim herself? Or would today's public bay for her blood and label her evil and selfish?
In summary a well written and thought provoking novel

Being English, I loved reading about American history of that time. Also knowing the heroin, Ruth was an ancestor of the author, made the story even more amazing.
Ms Scott, is a wonderful writer, she draws the reader into the life of those times, and in most cases it was a hard life, especially for a woman.
Even though there are a lot of characters, it was easy to keep track of them all. At first I found the language a little strange, but soon got used to it. I don’t want to say too much, at the risk of giving the story away.
This book is packed with drama and action, and took my emotions all over the place.
For me, the tragic event at the end of the book, which led to Ruth being hanged, came as a huge surprise.
When I first started the book, I wondered if I was going to like it as it’s not my usual genre. However, the more I read, the more it pulled me in, until I was lost in Ruth’s world, and found myself reading late into the night…desperate to find out what was going to happen to this naive, childish, and very likable girl.
This a great book and not one I will forget in a hurry!
