There are numerous verses in God's Word that reference 'The New Birth'-Ephesians 2:1 'And you has hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sin'.It could be called a spiritual resurrection,a spiritual renewal or a spiritual awakening. What 'The New Birth' essentially accomplishes is-"A thorough alteration and transformation of the whole inner man." It does not create a new man but his views on God,sin, the world,himself... are so radically different than they were, that in some sense he is a new man.J.C.Ryle notes that this occurs at different stages in peoples lives(when they are born again)but the majority of people are regenerated when they are adults.
The author asserts that to deny the necessity of 'Being Born Again' one must be ignorant of the corruption of man's heart.Do you desire to go to heaven? Unless you are born again you cannot see the 'Kingdom Of God'. 'The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God,for they are foolishness unto him' 1Corinthians 2:14. Unless you are 'Born From Above', spiritual things, the preaching of the cross, the wisdom of God, will all seem foolish to you. When God regenerates an individual,by His grace and through His power, the wisdom of this world, now appears foolish to them, and in reality it is.
A portion of this book has been abridged and is a part of the book 'Absolutely Basic' which is published by Grace Publications. There are some Christian writers whose writings will benefit the soul whatever their subject.J.C.Ryle is one of those authors. His style is simple, strait forward and powerful. This is a very helpful book on an important Christian doctrine.
Ryle has one focus in this tract: being born again. As a youth pastor, I am always seeking how to best counsel teenagers. The first thing I ask is this: is this person born again? Do they have a new nature, or are they still confined to the old man? This book just adds to the great Truth of the Gospel of Christ, that it is nothing you can say or do that will save you, but it is the work of God in your heart. He creates a new man where the old man once was, and that new man has new desires, new priorities, new everything. If a person is not regenerate, if he is not new, he does not have eternal life. No, he is not born again.
Ryle ends his book with this, "You and I are traveling to a place where controversies will all be forgotten, and nothing but eternal realities remain. Would you have a real hope in that day? See to it that you have a real regeneration. Nothing else will do. "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God (John 3:3)." The truth of the Gospel is so simple, and it is so humbling.
