Editorial Reviews
Regimental Sgt. Zippo is the legendary "album that never was" for Elton John. Signed to DJM as an artist in early 1968, he cut 12 tracks at DJM Studios in London's New Oxford Street for a debut album that was never released. As part of the excavation of material for Elton's Jewel Box collection, the original running order was located. After the success of its limited release in mono for Record Store Day 2021, it is now available on CD and contains both stereo and mono mixes.

Elton’s musical sense and his arrangement ability are already in evidence but Bernie Taupin’s lyrics had yet to evolve beyond the more pretentious juvenile rhythms that marked all of his early work with Elton. Here they dominate and are the weakest link of the compositions.
Caleb Quayle, who would appear on Elton’s early albums before Davey Johnston joined Elton’s band, appears and even co-writes one song here.
The CD includes both the mono and stereo mixes of the album.
Top reviews from other countries
It’s not a well organised album, with stories being told in no order, “Nina” doesn’t land like it may have done with another band and there’s no real stand out aces (although “Regimental Sgt Zippo” at the end of side one may be the exception to that) but it’s a solid album and I definitely think one worth having.
The pressing is great, nice and clean, flat and unmarked. For £18, I think this is great value.
Fantastic album and a nice change from the usual Elton ballad album.
However the 12 tracks are in mono and then a stereo mix [typically many albums in that era were released separately in both formats on vinyl].
Was for the music, it is typical for the era - a bit Beatles [of the latter years] sounding. However, Bernie Taupin hadn't matured yet on the lyrics side.
