This is a story of a young man's journey into maturity, from dependence to self-reliance, from narcissism to integrity.
As others have mentioned, the geographic imagery is beautiful, the sex is very hot but I was more interested in the philosophical discussion. Conservatism has suffered from an unprincipled assault by rebellious people who obstinately refuse to reason. Mr. Dale explains quite concisely that traditional values are tradition for a reason. He cuts right to the heart of the philosophical divide and draws a clear line that should not be crossed.
Reason is uniquely human trait that encourages us to be curious and to act on what we learn. But we have to be willing to learn. We must accept the responsibility of gathering relevant information to the best of our abilities, use our common sense to reason out a conclusion and take a stand.
Chip is interesting and engaging because he is willing to learn and even be counseled by those with experience. Rather than remain a one dimensional child-like personality, he chose to learn, process what he learned, act on what he learned and took responsibility for his choices. How can anyone argue against that? And yet, some would argue that coming to his own conclusions makes him a nut-job.
