- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2022Few advisors have as much experience building and transforming companies as serial entrepreneur Chuck Blakeman, builder of twelve business in eight industries on four continents. The founder of Crankset Group and 3to5 Clubs has now delivered a masterful book on organizational transformation: “Re-Humanizing the Workplace (By Giving Everybody Their Brain Back)” [Crankset Publishing, 2021].
Describing what he calls the Participation Age, Blakeman weaves empirical evidence for the benefits of participation and stories of successful companies that have already realized those benefits. Stories of vanguard companies like Haier, Buurtzorg, W.L. Gore and Buffer effectively counterbalance industrial-age, brittle and bureaucratic organizational thinking.
Beginning with the history of why organizations are designed the way they are (Chapter One: “Lipstick on a Pig”) and ending with an impassioned invitation to join the Participation Age, Blakeman expertly addresses salient topics like distributed decision making (DDM), mission-centeredness, leadership vs. management, value optimization, participative meetings, commitment making and many others with alacrity born of experience.
I read “Re-Humanizing the Workplace” in one sitting, internalized its wisdom, and recommend it highly for those seeking practical advice on how to join the Participation Age.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2021If you are looking for a way to take your team from just doing what you'll tell them, average, people who show up to get a paycheck into workers who take initiative, care, and really want to make a difference this is your How To manual. Chuck has done an amazing job of sharing what world class organizations do and how they do it. I was motivated and inspired to look at work from a completely different viewpoint and tie it back to the individuals who help me and my company thrive each day. Simple concepts, powerful in application. Not your run of the mill advice because this gets at the core of why we work and how to motivate yourself and your team way beyond the money, which can impact your business and your clients in massive ways.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2021As a practicing dentist, speaker and coach in the dental profession, I find this book to be a primer on how to create a practice that will function at the highest level for those it serves as well as for those serving, with minimal turnover and maximal happiness. I will refer to this amazing book often as I help dentists and their community of colleagues grow and flourish

@Timothy_HughesReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 4, 20215.0 out of 5 stars How to get a purpose driven workforce, that loves to come to work
Chuck Blakeman’s book, “Re-Humanizing the Workplace” has been a revelation to me. I have worked all my life in hierarchical structures and matrix organisations and always felt them lacking. What Chuck does is provide a framework for business, Distributed Decision-making (DDM) that provides business with a structure and a methodology to give employees what they want, purpose, a feeling of belonging and an ability to contribute.
DDM, also gives business leaders a loyal, purpose driven workforce, that is motivated to contribute not as employees on a “hamster wheel” but as employees that love to work.
It’s important to point out that Chuck’s book is not some “fluffy” let’s sit around a campfire cross legged and chant, call to action. It’s a structure and a practical framework, with case studies that will allow you to implement your own DDM organisation. In fact, I plan to do this within my own organisation.
