Great box set. The records are nice and heavy and sound great. The box is sturdy and beautiful. The booklet is large with plenty of good pictures and several essays and letters by Reich which are very illuminating as to his thought process when he was composing these pieces. Certainly, this music is not for everyone - it is repetitive and requires patience but it is extremely rewarding. The level of rhythmic and melodic complexity that arises from the repeating patterns of tuned drums and marimbas is really impressive. If you have an interest in minimalism or experimental music then you're gonna want to check this out.

I’m a seasoned Reichian who knows and loves this music very much.

If you only know Reich’s earlier or later music, you might be surprised at how gentle it sounds. Yes the relentless repetition is there, but the gradual emergence of the musical process and the solfege vocals give the music a long-form contempletative sheen. I think the loose 1974 hippie vibe beats later recordings: it is played with the joy of discovery by musicians who collaborated on the phrasing and timing of the music. Mr Reich explains the ensemble’s working approach: “is this beautiful, is this sending chills up and down my spine or not?” This is why people will get Reich but not get Boulez or Stockhausen (‘much as I love those guys too).

It’s great to hear this on vinyl. It’s analogue music after all, a successful attempt to reproduce, and exceed, the unearthly effects heard in synth oscillators and modulators. It is music haunted by ghostly emergent harmonies and the continental train journeys the composer made as a child. It is global as well as unearthly, a strange amalgam of western and eastern musics, as spiritually human as it is machinelike.

The packaging is great, a glossy box, heavy discs, a lush book with essays, notes, session charts and pix, a download code so you don’t play the vinyl to death . . . .

. . . Because it’s limited to 2500 copies, charmingly numbered in handwriting (Reich’s own, I like to imagine).

Delivery was great too, on time and in a sturdy box from Amazon to protect your precious purchase.
