From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Luna, an orphaned princess, has been living in a tower with her rescuers since they saved her from an assassin on the day she was born. On that day, her kingdom and all its neighbors were plunged into seemingly eternal darkness thanks to a lunar eclipse. What's worse, enormous flesh-eating creatures (called "Dwellers") came scuttling out of the ground as the endless night fell hard on the land. Now, 17 years after the eclipse, Luna happens to rescue a rugged survivor named Fowler, who agrees to travel with the princess to a fabled island free of Dwellers. What begins as a fast-paced adventure quickly gets bogged down in the quagmire of Luna and Fowler tromping through the forest, fighting with each other, avoiding getting killed, and resisting the urge to fall in love. Luna, who is blind, has heightened senses and has been trained to fight, yet she falls into the damsel-in-distress role much too readily. There are some moments of true suspense, but Luna's characterization is inconsistent. The cliff-hanger ending guarantees more books to come, though readers might not feel compelled to stick around. VERDICT An additional purchase where apocalypse and fantasy novels tinged with tame romance are popular.—Abby Bussen, Cudahy Family Library, WI

Sophie Jordan’s REIGN OF SHADOWS is magical and unexpected and enchanting and breathtaking. Its first lines will transport you into an intriguing and terrifying world that has been plunged into darkness. It is a fairytale that begins with a princess trapped in a tower. It is an epic adventure filled with many obstacles and dangers and deadly foes. It is riveting and nerve-wracking and heartbreaking and amazing and absolutely unforgettable.

All Luna wanted was her freedom. Confined to the tower she’d lived in for most of her life, she wished for the chance to explore the world beyond its doors. Even the threat of danger wasn’t enough to dissuade her from wanting to leave behind the safety of the tower.

So when the opportunity to sneak out arose she took it. When her decision put her in a position to choose between her own safety and that of someone else, she chose to help. When her choices compromised the security of the tower and put her loved ones at risk she would have her freedom, even if she she didn’t truly want it.

Author Sophie Jordan introduces a main character who is heroic, kind-hearted, stubborn, and selfless. Luna is willing to do whatever it takes to protect those she loves, even if it means leaving them behind. And even if it means putting her trust in a boy she barely knows, who has made it abundantly clear he wants nothing to do with her.

Fowler is a reluctant hero. He’s brave, a skilled fighter, and has the potential to be exactly who Luna needs him to be. But his past has forced him to keep secrets, to harden his heart, and to keep her at arm’s length for as long as he possibly can.

Wow! This book was so much more than I imagined it would be. I loved Luna's character and felt she was a very strong female that could take care of herself, even if Sivo and Perla didn't agree. All she really wants is to be on the Outside. "Dying in the tower. Living the entirety of my days within its walls. My presence, my life, unmarked. Unremembered. Unimportant. As though it never happened." You can tell she wants more!
Then there's Fowler. Poor, poor Fowler. This is from his POV, "I had never been my weakest as when I allowed love and hope into my heart." How can you not love the poor boy.
Together they struggle to avoid the dwellers (some rather freaky creatures) and all the other dangers in the world. There is a major cliffhanger at the end and I desperately need the next book!

This one was okay for me. The main character Luna is pretty unbelievable with some of the stuff she can do, but then again I have never been blind. Fowler the "love interest" who is not interested in making friends did a complete 360 too fast for me. The creatures are interesting enough, but really not too much happened, and it ended on a pretty big cliffhanger.

Reign of Shadows is an interesting YA fantasy book with romance, it tells the story of Luna, a 17-year-old girl that has lived her entire life in a tower in a forest that is said to be cursed and with the only human contact of her caregivers Perla and Sivo, whom had been dedicated to protecting her from the murderer of her parents and the outside world. For the last 17 years the kingdom had lived almost in eternal darkness due to an eclipse, with only one hour a day of light, so that the world around it has changed and is not safe, because there creatures called "dwellers", which are a zombie like that eat humans, also due to the lack of sunlight is difficult to grow plants, so food is scarce. And despite all this Luna wants to explore the world.

So when she stumbles and saves the life of Fowler, a young man whose main goal is to survive in the strange world in which he had to live and what he least want is a fellow traveler, due to some unexpected circumstances he reluctantly accept Luna to tag along in his search of a safe place. So most of the plot is about their journey and the obstacles they encountered along the way, besides the romance that develops between them.

The book is told from the point of view of Luna and Fowler, so we get to know both of them and we learn a little about Fowler's background and this give us some understanding of why he's so harsh with Luna and so disconnected from his humanity.

Thank you to Edelweiss and HarperTeen for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

One of my goals this year was to step out of my reading comfort zone. While I know I enjoy YA, I am still getting my feet wet with the fantasy genre. I think this was a step in the right direction; Reign of Shadows was a pleasant surprise for me.

As a rule, I’m not a fan of first person dual POV. The switch is sometimes confusing and even in this one, there were times when I had to scroll back to the first page of the chapter to see who was narrating. Surprisingly, this didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the story. I love the premise of this book – the presumed-dead heir to the throne hiding out in a tower in the middle of the woods relatively safe while outside of the walls surrounding her, chaos reigns. Luna was an interesting heroine. She was very sheltered and, in some ways, naïve, but she was a good judge of character. For being so in tune to what was going on around her, I’m surprised she was as adventurous as she was. That’s one of the things I really enjoyed about her character – she didn’t allow fear to rule her. Fowler was even more fearless than Luna was. He’d made a solid effort to shut out the world and not make attachments, but his compassion rises up at the most inopportune times. His resourcefulness and determination have kept him alive, but with Luna now by his side, the stakes are higher than ever.

Reign of Shadows flew by for me. It was one adventure after another, and while I could always tell where Fowler was coming from (he was the more logical of the two,) I sometimes questioned Luna’s decisions. They felt a bit hasty, but as I mentioned before, she was sheltered and still young, and I think she was a bit of an idealist.
