I have also believed that my large focus of recent years into the early Japanese Reiki of Mikao Usui and Chujiru Hayashi and others in their circle and indentifying with them has been a sufficiently holistic exposure of myself into what Reiki brings to students and the world.
However, "Reiki for Dogs," by Kathleen Prasad, is a truly great book, really even for all time. It not only focuses on Reiki treatment for dogs specific details, but it touches upon, actually quite amazingly and with full sincerity, broad and deep spiritual concepts.
Even the fairly large number of chapter-heading, and similar quotes from wise individuals, is broadly-reaching, diverse, and a wonderful resource in itself, especially for meditation. In other words, one can profit briefly and concisely by this book, if that is one's choice, just by going through the various wise and diverse quotations Prasad has sprinkled throughout her book.
Lastly, there must be more, but at the moment, I can only remember two things that have made me cry on multiple exposures/multiple occasions experiencing the same thing (eventually that power of the thing may wear away): I'm speaking of things that make me cry, as a grown man. This means they must be very profound.
One thing that I recall, has always made me cry as a grown man, is the second-to-last chapter of this book, "Reiki for Dogs," by Kathleen Prasad, where she describes the latter days and dying process of her beloved dog, Dakota. The second thing that used to always make me cry, happens to be the second of three movements (the slow movement) of the Fifth Beethoven Cello Sonata.
Incidentally, if the reader of this review is (hopefully) now interested in listening to the 5th Beethoven Cello Sonata, I've sampled many recordings and I am confident only two readily available recordings on CD, out of the many such recordings now readily available on amazon of this piece of music: there are only 2 available recordings that do the 2nd movement justice. These two recordings are honestly the only two worth listening to, of this subtle and amazing 2nd movement: 1950s recording by Pablo Casals and Rudolf Serkin, now available on Sony Classics CD, and a more recent father/son recording of the piece by cellist Adrian Brendel and pianist Alfred Brendel, on the Decca label, if I remember correctly.
In conclusion, the most obvious reason to purchase "Reiki for Dogs" is the limited availability of information on this subject matter, Ms. Prasad being a highly-experienced, definite expert on this subject. However, perhaps the most potent reason to buy "Reiki for Dogs," is that, among all the modern, wise, spiritual guidance books out there, I'm sure "tons" of them: this book truly delivers, the more so that it's not it's initial stated aim, necessarily: "Reiki for Dogs" is one of the most profound life-changing kind of books/spiritually grounding kind of books, I've literally ever encountered in my life.
Sometimes when life is so busy we don't always have time to get together with other humans to share Reiki one on one in person... my little Chi who is always at my side (even now while I type this review) is always ready for a Reiki Treatment! Getting this book has given both of us a Reiki Booster! I was gonna order it a few times and change my mind... don't hesitate to order a copy! Absolutely wonderful book to use as a guide for you and whatever furried, winged or scaled friends you encounter!
