This is one of the best novels I’ve read in a long time, and the fact that there was some things that I really didn’t like attests to the strength of the book, since I still have no qualms in rating it a five. The first chapter was unnecessary, and made the following twelve chapters read like backstory, when I was impatient to get on and see what happened after chapter one. Then chapter thirteen repeats chapter one in more detail. If I had it to do over, I would have skipped chapter one and read from chapter two on. This would have made the novel much stronger. That being said, this is still a magnificent read--one of those stories where the characters stick with you long after the last page closes. Kathryn and Larson put each other through so much, because of the new circumstances in which they find themselves, but they change and grow and become better people through it all. This makes the ending even more satisfying. My hat’s off to Tamara Alexander.
Book One of the Fountain Creek Chronicles is set in 1867 Colorado after the Civil War. It introduces the reader to Larson Jennings and his wife Katheryn after they've been married for ten years, but remain childless. Larson's jealousy threatens more than his marriage, but Katheryn's loyalty and gentle Proverbs 31 spirit tempers his broken soul—until events spiraling out of control test their mettle and commitment.
This book departs from the usual Historical Romantic Suspense genre in that it leads the reader into the lives of the protagonists after the wedding. It recognizes that not all nuptials lead to a "happily ever after" without Divine participation combined with a great deal of openness and effort on the part of the married couple.
A word of caution, this book contains violence, references to an immoral lifestyle, and some tastefully done sexual scenes, but nothing the Christian publishing industry would not condone. An excellent read that is marvelously written, this book explodes with vitality. If it could receive more than five stars, it would. I read it in the Kindle version.
Technically it is well written and edited. The characters are well defined, the story is unique and believable. You experience emotion along with the characters but, it is more than the sum of its elements. My heart cried out PLEASE SEE HIM! I looked inward at my own widow's heart. What would I do differently if given a second chance. Are you married? Have you been married? Will you be? Do you long for that true intimate relationship that Christ calls us to? Read this book. Then close your eyes and thank God for the second chance you've just been given.
