Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In her latest, Turner (Ghetto Superstar) offers her usual high drama, betrayal, and street lit hoodlums with moralizing admonishments regarding drugs, greed, fame, and materialism. After surviving, barely, her addicted sister's monstrous attempt to sell her for drugs, Beijing Lee works as a concierge to the rich and famous at the exclusive Tabby hotel chain. Whether hiding superstars from the paparazzi, getting VIPs out of legal snafus, or procuring drugs, Beijing has gone every extra mile for her clientele. Her life takes a turn for the strange, however, when she meets young rapper Teflon the Don, becoming his manager and lover until his heroin addiction goes out of control. A subsequent romance offers a chance for redemption, but before long, Beijing finds that those closest to her aren't what they seem. Turner packs this quickie with melodrama, making it a thoroughly entertaining but predictable affair; with supporting characters straight from central casting, readers may feel as though they've read this novel before. Is this really the same Nikki Turner who wrote Project Chick and A Hustler's Wife?

Nikki? What happened? Listen, girl, yu kno something's wrong when people are saying "Well, at least it's not as bad as her last two books." I mean, damn.

To be fair, there is some Nikki flavor here. Just not enough, and only in little spurts. I did find the beginning interesting, but just the very beginning. Everything leading up to Bejing being sold is cool, but almost immediately after that it goes downhill.

I wish I could say something really good, or even good at all about Relapse, but I just don't wanna lie.

But you know what, Nikki. I'm still gonna buy yur next.

This book was good but got on my last nerve. I got tired of Lootsie's game and Beijing always letting hi get away with things. I initially thought Lootsie really cared about Beijing. I guess he did I in his own way. He was extravagant, gave Beijing everything except his unconditional love. He lacked being trustworthy and honest with Beijing. I was happy that Paris got her act together and had a loving relationship with her sister. I would have liked to know what happened to Chyna. Tanya was scandalous and her jealousy got her into big trouble. Paris actually saw Rayna for the snake that she was. From other connecting books, it's safe t o assume that Lootsie did not end up with Beijing. Michael, Michael, I believe Michael alias Stash got Beijing. Great book.

Her middle class father Sterling raised Beijing Lee as a single parent. However, she visited her mother Willabee and her older sister Paris who Sterling knew lived on the other side of the track and in her dad's mind they were riding the train the wrong way. He is proven right when ignoring her conscience Paris sells ten year old Beijing to Chimp so she can buy crack. Teenager Mike intrudes on the sale and using a knife kills Chimp before warning Paris to take care of her sister better or else.

Years pass and Beijing has become a hotel concierge insuring the wealthy receive the best treatment. In Vegas, she thinks she may be in love with Lootchee, who treats her nice and gives her luxurious presents. However, he also brings with him a dark side that places Beijing in trouble even as her maternal family causes havoc in her life. However, all hell breaks loose with her life is in danger; Beijing thinks back to her last rescue and knows she could use a hero again just as Mike known as Stash is back.

This is a superb street lit tale that contains a powerful cast especially the heroine within an exciting story line. The tale grips readers immediately when the reader realizes Paris is selling her ten years old sister because the addiction supersedes everything else. That hold on the audience never lets up as her "loved ones" place Beijing in jeopardy while a late rivalry between Lootchee and Stash leave fans wanting more. This is a strong look at surviving the streets where a Relapse is the magnetic pull of your family.

I was very confused with this book. The storyline was all over the place. I was very disappointed and this is the first Nikki Turner book I've read. Please tell me all her book are not this crazy. I've heard nothing but good things about this author however this book was so unreal that it was almost funny.Don't waste your time with this one unless you want your mind boggled.

This is my first book from Nikki Turner and as much as I heard about this author I am thoroughly disappointed with Relapsed. The book read like a bunch of scenes left over from other books she may have written and used for this one. None of this book made a lick of sense. The robberies, the kidnapping ugh what was the purpose. I like the fact that Beijing had a job as a hotel concierge and a lot of light was shed on how the business is handled from that point of view. There was no flow or building up to events or indications of a character's intentions. The readers were told things instead of being allowed to read the happenings for themselves.

Scenes from different plots is all I read and I don't mean that in a good way. Story development as well as character was nil. In other words, the book was all over the place. For a newbie I would say okay better luck next time, but for a seasoned writer, I'm stunned beyond belief. I hope there isn't a part two, but from the way the book ended I can see that happening but why?

The reason i gave this book a 3 star because i liked the begining. After that i don't know what happened. The book was all over the place, some parts made no sense and it just made no sense. This book had potentials but i don't know where the author was going with it, from irrelevant characters to, unbelievable events.

First of all i would like to say that i am a nikky turner fan, but this book was horrible, what happened to the writing style that we all love from the authors previous books. she said in the beginning of her book that she had a deadline to make and that is very clear in the way this book was written. it seems like the book was rushed and the story was all over the place.there were so many characters i got lost at time and it seemed to just drag on forever. it also seemed as if the main focus of the book was the main characters carrer as a hotel concierge. i had to make myself finish this book and i was very upset at the ending. i felt like i just forced myself to read this piece of crap for it to end like this! a waste of time. for anyone who is familliar with turners other work dont wast your time with this one.
