Editorial Reviews
For the first time Barbra Streisand has curated a release of her previously unreleased material. In an unparalleled career, Barbra has accumulated over 100 previously unreleased recordings. Over the past year she has painstakingly gone through the recordings to come up with this collection - RELEASE ME. Highlights include a striking version of "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today" with Barbra on vocals and Randy Newman on Keyboards from 1971 and "With One More Look," an unreleased track from a SSTAR IS BORN. This is Barbra's first ever compilation of unreleased material in a career that has spanned 50 years.

Perhaps my favorite aspect of the record is that there are selections from each decade/ phase in Barbra's career: outtakes from 60s albums Simply Streisand and What About Today? ("Willow Weep For Me" and "Lost In Wonderland," respectively), 70s albums Stoney End, A Star Is Born OST and Streisand Superman ("I Think It's Going To Rain Today," "With One More Look At You" and "Try To Win A Friend"), The Broadway Album from the 80s ("Being Good Isn't Good Enough" and "Home"), Back to Broadway from the 90s ("How Are Things In Glocca Morra?") and What Matters Most from the 2000s ("If It's Meant To Be"). The remaining two selections are from two "aborted" studio albums, The Singer from the 70s and Life Cycle Of A Woman (not sure when this was supposed to be released, but my guess would be post 90s given the tone of Barbra's voice).
The only slight qualm I have is that the album could have been more comprehensive and included more songs- a two LP collection would have been great. But I hear more of these Barbra rarities are to be released from her "vault" in years to come, so at least we Babs fans have that to look forward to. One final note: I own this on vinyl and I have to say I recommend that as a format. There's something about listening to this album on vinyl that's especially great- probably because most of these songs were recorded and originally intended for vinyl.
I doubt this album would appeal to those who don't consider themselves Barbra super-fans. But for those of us who are, it's a superb addition to our collections.
There are many standouts on this CD including the Astrud Gilberto inspired "Lost In Wonderland" that sounds wonderfully like the "The Girl From Ipanema," with Barbra handling the flowing Bossa Nova vocals with the greatest of ease, and "Mother And Child" where she sings a duet with herself much like "One Less Bell To Answer/A House Is Not A Home" from Barbra Joan Streisand . More gems include "Being Good Isn't Good Enough," "Willow Weep For Me," "Try To Win A Friend," and the studio version of "Didn't We," which had a live version on Live Concert at the Forum . Though the songs were recorded at different times and for different album projects, one can easily understand that these songs could have fit on any one of Streisand's various albums from The Broadway Album to Lazy Afternoon . Stylistically they sound complete.
There are some tracks that miss the mark, however. Not so much in quality, but they have a feel of being demo or rehearsal versions rather than being actual songs that might have been released as singles or included on an album.
One of the songs from A Star is Born , "With One More Look At You" was featured on the A Star Is Born soundtrack, making its appearance in the finale, paired with "Watch Closely Now," and was recorded live with a slightly different cut than what was featured in the movie. Here, the song is in its entirety but it sounds more of an experiment in trying to find the right style, vocally, rather than just being a stand alone cut. Even if it were included on the ASIB album it would have sounded off.
Streisand is in fine voice and the orchestra sounds superb, which isn't the problem; however, the note and chord changes, along with the melisma, lead me to believe this was a demo or rehearsal. I'm not sure if I'm using the right wording, but once you listen to the song you'll understand what I mean.
Likewise, the song "Home" from The Wiz - The Super Soul Musical: Original Cast Album (1975 Broadway Cast) . It starts off really well and Barbra puts her own stamp on it, which is very hard to do since Stephanie Mills's version, including her re-recording of the song featured on 1989's Home , is considered the definitive version. Anyway, the song starts off great but then loses steam about midway through.
Life long fans of Streisand -- like myself -- know that she can more than handle the frenetic pacing of a song like "Home," which is similar in vein to songs like "Don't Rain On My Parade," " Before The Parade Passes By," and "Somewhere," among scores of others, that are explosive ballad/torch songs that separate the chorus girls from the divas, so it isn't skill that keeps "Home" from being another stand out track on this CD. Like "With One More Look...," it sounds like "Home" is more of a demo/rehearsal track.
About midway through it sounds as if Streisand loses interest or is concentrating on something else, and the song is no longer from the "actress who sings," where each song is sung and interpreted like a play, but just another song by any other person. But towards the end, she picks up with some conviction and "Home" sounds like a song that's viable. It's very hard to describe in words, but once you hear it you'll understand what I mean.
I know that this CD is supposed to be composed of unreleased tracks that will invariably contain demos and rehearsals that were not fit to be released, but I thought that you should know.
There's some incidental dialogue on some of the tracks, which is a nice touch, giving the listener a feel of being behind-the-scenes, but it's very short lasting for only a few seconds.
My hopes was that RELEASE ME was going to be like Just for the Record and contain amazing stuff that's never been available on CD or albums. Even though there's some really good stuff on here, I was hoping for the live recordings of "The Way We Were," and "Evergreen" that Barbra performed during the concert filming of A Star Is Born, which was seen in a documentary that aired once called "Barbra: With One More Look." Or how about the 60s recordings of her stints at the Bon Soir and the Hungry I?
The CD comes with a booklet with EXCELLENT liner notes by Jay Landers, who has produced many of Streisand's albums, a note from Barbra, and also has some color and black and white pictures from various recording sessions and publicity shots.
Reading from the liner notes and I've come to find that there is a vault somewhere that contains master reels of the ENTIRE Happening in Central Park concert (I read that the 1968 free concert in the park was 2 hours long, but the soundtrack was whittled down to just under 40-minutes) and live recordings from the Bon Soir, the Hungry I, and other concerts, along with EVERY recording Streisand has ever made! That means there's a treasure trove of stuff just waiting for us fans to discover.
Also, Landers makes note of a live performance of "Didn't We," which Barbra performed on the David Frost Show, and will be included, wait for it... on a multi-DVD box-set career retrospective called, "Barbra Streisand: My Life In Words And Music." I CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT!
I've looked for that DVD box set, but it isn't showing up on Amazon so stay tuned kiddies!
