While incarcerated for her role in her mother’s death, Gypsy saw her story told by others again and again in the media, from news reports and podcasts to TV series like The Act (Hulu). Now, granted early parole and preparing to start a new life, she’s free to speak directly to her supporters and the world.
Falsely told that she suffered from debilitating, chronic illnesses, Gypsy grew up enduring physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her mother Dee Dee, including unnecessary medication and surgery. But her desperate attempts to escape a lifetime of isolation led Gypsy into the grip of another abuser, ultimately resulting in her mother’s murder.
Released is Gypsy’s frank, unflinching, and deeply personal reflection on her past, present, and hoped-for future, and includes:
- Exclusive interviews with Gypsy recorded during her time in prison
- Gypsy’s contemplative writing on trust and betrayal, love and freedom, self-worth and identity, prison life, her marriage, and other personal issues
- Personal photos, drawings, and other memories from years past
Created with writers Melissa Moore and Michele Matrisciani, Released is a declaration of Gypsy’s resolve to turn her pain into perseverance, take accountability for her actions, and help others escape the trap that circumscribed her life for so long.

I was hoping that this book would provide more than what unauthorized series and books have put out there, and it did. There is great accountability and, quite honestly, a discernible trail of healing and hope present in this book. Some might say “She’s only showing the public what she wants them to see, she’s a manipulator after all,” but I don’t believe that’s the case. I’m sure her upcoming memoir will delve deeper into things, but this shorter book presents a glimpse as to who Gypsy-Rose was, currently is, and hopes to become, and presents it warts and all. For all intents and purposes, the book seems to be authentic. (Go ahead, I’m sure there are many who will disagree and crucify me in the comments. Just don’t expect a reply if you do.)
Another reason I wanted to read this book lies in the fact that I am well on the road to earning my advanced degree in school- and clinical-mental health counseling. One of the things I was saddened to read is that, while in prison, Gypsy-Rose was deemed as not qualifying for therapy. Therapy is a wonderful tool that anyone should have access to at any time in their lives. I’m not sure how any person on this planet could ever be deemed as not qualifying for therapy. The soon-to-be therapist in me is especially happy to see that one of her plans as a free person is to seek a therapist and be in therapy/counseling.
There are many good things to be found in these pages and it’s certainly not the sob-story some are claiming. I recommend giving this one a chance. I wish Amazon would reclassify this. Filing it under “Hoaxes & Deceptions,” when not entirely proven to be so is a bit unfair but I also understand that authors can choose as well. It’s sad that all involved felt this classification was the one that would be most looked into and read.
A little disjointed at times. A little insightful at others.
I know about rehabilitation and I genuinely cringe at my own judgement in questioning hers (especially because my heart is truly with her), but, at the end of the day I really do feel quite naive buying into it. I'm hoping her upcoming book will alleviate some of these mixed feelings I experiencing.
TL;DR:
Definitely not boring and there are more details than “what we already knew”. It’s more intimate, detailed, and from Gypsy’s personal perspective.
If you have ever had any interest in Gypsy’s story, this is by far one of the most intimate recollections of her experiences. It is so eloquently written. Gypsy shows a profound amount of self awareness, accountability, and introspection of herself and the media. She also throws in some humor that perfectly balances everything out.
It’s not overwhelmingly long and has so much depth to it too. I was able to start and finish it last night and I’m not much of an avid reader.
Detailed review:
Melissa Moore and Gypsy seem so genuine in their interactions and conversations presented. It truly felt like reading a conversation between friends rather than a dry interview that lacks detail or depth.
I find her memoir to be beautifully timed as she responds to many of the ongoing conversations taking place right now about her.
I’ve seen many people speak about Gypsy as if she is unaware of her experiences or unable to see the media’s opinions/concerns. She proves her awareness and discusses many of these topics and more.
Gypsy shows a healthy awareness of not being able to get away from the media and is deciding to use her publicity as a tool to bring change and to redefine herself and the numerous portrayals made about her.
This memoir is part of her start of being an advocate to change the same system she fell through the cracks of so many times. It’s the start of her aspiration to be a voice for children who suffer in abusive situations. While holding accountability for her actions, she is attempting to bring change for victims of abuse to help them get out of their situation in a way that prevents detrimental outcomes.
It’s very much worth reading. Gypsy, you blossoming, blooming, and brilliant. Rooting for you, always.🖤
I don’t think this was a money grab like some reviewers are saying. Yes, most of the information discussed the public were already privy to. But, it helped me understand where Gypsy’s mind and emotions had been these past few years. I genuinely enjoyed this book. Maybe it’s just because I’m a therapist, or a consistent follower of her progress, I have no idea.
Gypsy’s authenticity is conveyed in her writing. I respect her for being as open as she was. She has quite a way with words, with everything she has been through, she has remained humble. I admire that. I look forward to reading her full memoir 💓

Highly recommend
She deserves a good life and happiness now but she should just go do that with her family In Privacy like she claims she wants in the book.
