They are sweet together, although on their own, they work their own brand of magic as well, and despite the existential threats from the vampires in France, there is still time for personal moments to shine too. I think Ms. Reynolds could have extended some scenes and added others to fill in the gaps to fully flesh this novella out, to turn it into a true novel, but it works just as well as is. And in the end, that's all that matters.
Now I'm looking eagerly forward to the next installment of this series, spearheaded by a relative newcomer named Quinn, and his takeover of Dublin from the current Lord, Sorley. Well, this one and the next book from the newer Stone Warriors series. I can't wait to see how it all works out and if the two series reconverge down the road. After all, they both sprang out of the initial material back in the first book, aptly called Raphael, where it all began.
I really can’t explain why I am reading/reviewing this fabulous novella months after its release. Usually I devour anything from the Vampires in America Series the minute I can get my hands on it. Anyway, better late than never and this was another can’t-put-down book, so clear your schedule and hunker in for a terrific read.
There is plenty of action and suspense, sexy times with Cyn & Raphael (thank you D.B. for not making it all about the sex), a good intro to Quinn (can’t wait for his book) and the real beginning of the vampire war in Europe. You will not be lost if this is your first foray with these vampires but you will enjoy it so much more if you follow the series from the beginning.
Why did I take off .5 in the rating? Well, it was just because I thought Cyn was a bit too blood thirsty. I see her as a tough, action oriented female, but never have I viewed her as bloodthirsty as she is in this novella.
The novellas where Rapheal and Cyn travel, that take place between the full books, are the perfect bridges and keep the suspense and intrigue going from one book to the next. They’re also the perfect introduction to new characters and upcoming settings.
When they’re taken out of their home turf you tend to learn more intricacies about them that you wouldn’t normally garner from the books set in their home town. I love seeing the facets of their relationship along with how the relationships that happen between all of the characters. I think that is one of my favorite things about this series … though there are a ton of other reasons I adore it.
Even though we only got a brief glimpse of Quin I’m curious to see what all happens when he gets to Ireland and settles in. Taking out Mathilde’s vampire was a nice insight into how the European vampire think and make me eager to see how the war will play out.
