Editorial Reviews
Review
- I have attended two of Rolly's public trainings. The first time was for MRO Spare Parts Management. It seems that I was transported to his world of World Class Maintenance. The second one was about Condition Based Maintenance. Though the stories and sidebars are the same as when I attended the first, I am still amazed at how he could relate all of his stories and connect them both to the roles of Operation and Maintenance in any industry. Being from the manufacturing industry for more than twenty five years and being employed by four companies, I have often seen issues and the disconnection between operations and maintenance, over and over again. The most common issue moving forward as heard from one quality expert which escapes my memory, and relating it with Operations and Maintenance, is that "we are managing the present with the tools of the past and thinking about the future with the mindset of the past." Rolly's book, provides a wealth of wisdom and actual years of experience on the roles of operations and maintenance. This is mostly recommended to leadership as this book shall serve as a guide and a template on how to move towards Reliability. The stories will definitely change our mindset and paradigm on the dealings and transactions of operation and maintenance. The tools mentioned in the book shall guide us to the future with our ultimate goal of improving reliability. Be it Japanese (TPM) or Western (RCM) style of maintenance model, the common denominator is the partnership between operators and maintenance. A must have book for industry's leadership or better yet, attend Rolly's trainings. Congratulations, Mr. Rolly "Stones" Angeles! From Rodel T. Domingo, Corporate Engineering and Maintenance Manager at Multiflex RNC Philippines, Inc. (URATEX).
- Reliability - A Shared Responsibility for Operators and Maintenance is a powerful book that provides a significant fact of Operators and Maintenance relationship and how these two functions evolve into a team that works together to greatly improve the Reliability of the Plant. A masterpiece by Mr. Rolly that would be a vehicle for cost efficient operation in any Manufacturing Plants or industries. This book also includes a powerful tool to aid us in implementing Autonomous Maintenance, Planned Maintenance, Reliability-Centered Maintenance, Root Cause Failure Analysis and FMEA/FMECA. Thank you very much Mr. Rolly for making our lives (Operators and Maintenance) more effective and efficient especially for me as a Mechanical Maintenance Head, this book will shape not only me but my team into a World Class Maintenance. From Marion Fajardo Gomez, Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor, Therma South Inc., Philippines
- Congratulations Mr. Rolly for writing this book. First, I would like to thank you for accepting me as part of the review team. I was very happy since I only heard of World Class Maintenance from my bosses and only few representative were allowed to attend your training. I only heard the echoed training which is quite hard to understand. I appreciate your choice of simple language in writing this book for easily grasping your point. Reliability - A Shared Responsibility for Operators and Maintenance is an enlightenment for industry putting maintenance dilemma into words. The truth is, it is overwhelming that reliability should be a priority which is not I used to hear from my 10 years of my industry experience as a maintenance, but you explain it with examples that is easily understood. Operators and maintenance working together will take a long journey of change. This change is hard to implement with the old mindset of operator and maintenance especially in my plant where operators are just high school graduates but with the current industry trend, hiring technical graduate operator or at least college level, I perceive is doable. I hope and pray people will read this book especially Top Management, so the operations will finally adapt this change. From Janice Dacles Casas, former maintenance at Cebu Mitsumi Philippines and Fairchild Semiconductor, Cebu Philippines
- This book contains significant and relevant theory and idealism. I never read thiskind of books before but it hits the core value of TPM. It is indeed maintenance quite necessary inany kind of manufacturing companies. Isalute for all technicalities which I don't know it comes from before, I havelearned a lot from this book. As atechnical personnel I can say that it's very much informative and vibrant. It makesa lot of sense in dealing with the alternative way on maintenance. Allthroughout, I was amazed by the author's knowledge's. Proud being a Filipino. Thank you for sharingthis kind of book with us the author is really a mastermind on this TPMworld. I absolute enjoyed reading iteven though I'm not really a reading enthusiast. I miss the Rolling Stone partwhich you gave the color on this book. Kudos Mr. Rolly Angeles for the goodjob. I now truly understand and felt being one of the maintenance team. This book has a heart and is very lively. I hope you continue to spread the meaningfulstory of the maintenance people. We oweyou all the knowledge and being a part of this team review. Congratulations Mr. Rolly this is a heck of success. Thank you. From Wilma S. Magbujos, ProcessTechnician, Transitions Optical Phils Inc., Philippines
From the Author
This book Reliability - A Shared Responsibility for Operators and Maintenance is a book emphasizing the importance of creating a solid partnership between the two. I believe that operators are important in any reliability and maintenance strategy because operators are the first line of defense on any failure that can occur on the equipment since they are the people closest to the equipment when the failure occur and not maintenance themselves. The worst industrial accidents that occurred throughout the world can be avoided if operators know the symptom of each failure when it is still small. They will be the once that will sense the failure first before maintenance. What I believe is that operators should not only operate the equipment but rather create a partnership in maintaining the equipment since equipment is a shared responsibility for the two. For as long as industry separate the function of both operators and maintenance, then industries will continue to be reactive.
From the Inside Flap
Foreward Message by Ronald Hilaria
- Before I became a global manager today, I was a technician working under maintenance back in the early 90's. Back then and even to this day there had been some conflict between maintenance people and operators in the factory floor. We the maintenance people would work in maintaining factory machines, and sometimes it could feel like a thankless job. The operators, directly involved in the production process would sometimes even look down on our contribution. Though both do vital contributions to the company, there always seems to be an air dissonance between the two. One feels that their work is not valued enough, or that the other's is valued too much.
- In the mid to late 90's, I was rooted up from being a technician into becoming a Trainer. From experiencing the friction firsthand, now I hold seminars for unifying both factions. My focus is on Autonomous Maintenance for operators, and taught things like Root Cause Analysis, avoiding mistakes with Poka-Yoke, and 8D Problem Solving with regards to the production line. These are things that needs the effective coordination between the maintenance and the operators, but that's easier said than done.
- I met Rolly during my years as a Trainer, back in 1997. I see in him a passion in dutifully doing his job as TPM crusader. We're both part of the TPM pillars, his focal point being on Planned Maintenance. But despite that, our goal is one and common: how do we provide harmony between the two factions, maintenance and operators? How do we promise productive output to our managers, and more importantly, the customer? How do we make a product that we could proudly call Reliable?
- It has been about more than two decades since I have last been a technician. Nowadays, I work behind a cubicle as a manager, though at times I still facilitate the occasional training. But though the title of my work changed, the question persists. It is our mission and duty as managers, trainers, operators, technicians, or maintenance to uphold a shared responsibility in the pursuit of Reliability.
- This textbook by Rolly Angeles brings a lot of experience in the table, a structured approach in managerial techniques on how to inspire our people in bringing harmony to our workplaces. May this book serve as an effective tool in your daily arsenal and contribute to your own valued experience.
From the Back Cover
Maintenance is not for maintenance alone to perform. It is for both operators and maintenance together to perform but in most industries the two functions remain separated. Operators are important in any reliability and maintenance strategy since they are the people closest to the asset during the time of failure. It means that they will be the ones that will experience the failure and not maintenance. They are our first defense on equipment failures and breakdowns and what is important is that they can sense the failure from happening at the earliest stage possible if they know their equipment well. Majority of failures and industrial accidents around the world can be prevented if operator knew the earliest stages of failure. This book emphasize strongly the bond between operators and maintenance and the need to create a permanent partnership in maintaining the equipment. The purpose of writing this book is for industries to realize that operators will also play a major role in maintenance and that maintenance can "never," escape the vicious cycle of being reactive if operators will not be involved with maintenance itself. I believe that creating a partnership between operators and maintenance will always be difficult during the start-up. It does not matter whether it will be done through Autonomous Maintenance or other means but what is important is to break down the departmental barrier and for operators and maintenance to develop a solid partnership in order for both of them to start preserving their equipment and assets. Empowering operators requires change in culture and this cannot be done overnight, it will take years to build an empowered workforce since we are not only changing the people but the culture or the organization. As many industries struggle. The role operator will play will be critical since they can sense the earliest stages of failure which can lead to a catastrophic breakdown. These failures can be prevented if industries will give a chance to operators on not being just switch flickers but having a thorough understanding about their equipment and assets they operate.
About the Author
- Mr. Rolly is one of the World Class Best Trainers I have come across during my 28 years career. The course was built up very methodically in the simplest way. His presentation skills and his command on the various Maintenance Strategies made the workshop very interesting. Mr. Rolly is one of the few Maintenance Professionals I have come across, attached, and dedicated to the Maintenance Profession. His wealth of experience and his humor made the RCM Workshop even more interesting. The structuring and delivery of the concept enable all the participants to initiate RCM studies very confidently. The training material provided by Mr. Rolly was excellent and was prepared with great care to ensure that all the participants have fully been benefited. I am sure that all the participants in this three-day workshop have been benefited from his technical and intellectual sharing of his knowledge. From Srinagesh Dy, General Manager, Reliance Industries Ltd., India
- Rolly Angeles is one of the best trainers (World Class) I have ever met in my life. The delivery of the RCM course by him was so smooth and straight to the point. Besides, he combined technicality with intellectualism, thereby carrying even the most assumed idle time along. The definition of the different tasks in RCM caught most of my attention. The RCM Information Worksheet simplifies the course to enable an ideal team to develop the best maintenance strategies. Although it is a challenge to convince the management team that is not trained on RCM to adopt, I will still insist that RCM is the best maintenance strategy worldwide. From Kalu-Kalu, Head of District Maintenance, Nigeria
