I've had a Honda eu2000i, 2000w generator for a few years now to use in case of power failure, hurricanes (we live in Florida), etc. I've used the generator once or twice but it always involved running extension cords through the house and leaving doors/windows opened. I watched the youtube video from Reliance Controls about how to wire a similar unit to the breaker box and it was pretty straightforward. My son and I did an inventory of which breakers controlled desired outlets/lights/fans/appliances in our home and we narrowed it down to four that would run the refrigerator, some lights and ceiling fans within the capacity of the generator's limits.
The result was very good. With this small 2000w generator we can power selected hard wired lights and fans as well as the refrigerator, and small TV, cable box and FIOS/wifi connectivity. I think we could even run a small AC window unit if needed (as seen on other youtube videos).
This is a well made switch and the instructions and available videos are great!
