On our last trip, our newest 7-Gallon Aquatainer just gave up and burst open, riding in a well-secured location in the carpeted bed of our truck. It's nice to have a container that holds so much water - until it breaks and soaks almost all the gear you store with it. In our case, we discovered the problem after arriving at a remote camp in Baja California. The container split and broke along the seam of the Aquatainer logo embossed onto the side of the container. We ended up having to spend an unplanned extra day at that camp while we dried out our gear and having less water than I'm comfortable with. We were lucky that the water didn't damage some sensitive equipment we had. Over the years, Reliance has made the plastic on these containers thinner and thinner. We also noticed that the corners now dent very easily, making it just a matter of time before it cracks along the edges of the dent (see photos).
If you are using these containers to store emergency water at home or in a static, stable location, they'll probably be OK. I used to recommend them to my friends for travel but I won't any longer. They've always had the issues with the spout leaking when turned on its side.
Our workaround on this last trip was to purchase a 5-gallon water-cooler service type bottle with a screw-top in the nearest large town. From that, we dispense water into a Rubbermaid 2.5-gallon drinking dispenser that has a recessed spout that never leaks. I think that the round bottles will be more durable. Plus, the round shape prevents wildlife (coyotes) from gaining purchase with their teeth to puncture the container - which had also been a problem with the Aquatainer.
I read the other reviews, everybody says the spigots leak. But so does every other water carrier spigot on the market that I've seen, so what then? I looked at the cap, there is a nice thick rubber gasket seal in there. Cool, so that won't leak. The spigot has a nice flange at the base of the threads, and the surfaces on the cap match up nicely. As if it was designed to have an o-ring there... Well, knowing that this would be a leak point, I went to the hardware store with it and matched one up. 7/8" ID, 1/8" thick was a perfect fit. I filled it up and placed it on it's side with the spigot pointing down, not a single drop in an hour. 47 cents was my cost, your local hardware store may be cheaper, a bulk order for someone mass producing water carriers would surely get them cheaper...
So there is that.
56lbs of water filled up, not for the weak folks. A 5 gallon carrier is 40lbs, that's a bigger difference than it sounds. Time will tell on the thin plastic, but as long as it doesn't get dropped or knocked around too much, I think it will be fine.
2 had malformed nozzles and wouldn't dispense water without leaking .
Not durable , not reliable
ALL but 1of mine leaked when we were desperately filling water containers as hurricane bore down on us .
If we had to depend on these for water storage in this Emergency , And we DID , we would have been in deep trouble .
We had to find and fill old water and milk jugs .
At least t hey didnt leak .
I am incensed that these failed in the exact situation I bought them for .
What a complete and dangerously unusable product .
They should stop selling this junk .
DO NOT BUY !
The screwtop lid doesn't seal correctly. I thought it was the inner nozzle at first, and set out to stop it from leaking, but turns out that it's the screw on lid itself with the coarse threads.
Not sure how to fix that, and not sure if I should return the item. Will update when I decide.
I decided to keep the container because it's large, stable, and visibly a water container. I took in on a couple of trips, and it performs as well (or actually better) than my other containers for diesel fuel and gas. Since all of them are very finicky, and I'm happy with this container overall, I'm going to increase my rating to 4-stars. I don't think it's an issue with the design of this particular unit, all of these types of containers just leak a little.
I use elastic netting to grip the fuel and the water in the back of the truck. Works well, especially when there is other gear in place to help keep it in place (otherwise is may slide side-to-side in strong turns).
