Religio Medici - Enhanced Version Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

In its day, Religio Medici was a best-seller all throughout Europe. Even to this day, it is widely circulated among novelists and writers. The book seems to be a type of personal memoir. In it, Sir Thomas Browne deeply ruminates about the world. His reflections are often theological--and possibly controversial. (The book was eventually banned in the 17th century). Nevertheless, it contains beautiful phrases that express spiritual truths in new and interesting ways. The prose can be difficult to decipher at times, but the editor has provided notes where needed, explaining words and illusions. Besides, half the joy in reading this book is getting lost in the powerful prose.

Tim Perrine
CCEL Staff Writer

This edition features an artistic cover, a new promotional introduction, an index of scripture references, links for scripture references to the appropriate passages, and a hierarchical table of contents which makes it possible to navigate to any part of the book with a minimum of page turns.

Tough read to follow but rhythmic indeed. Recommend this read for anyone looking to read something different without a specific plot if you will.

Difficult, but worth the effort. Timely, in a strange way.
Oslers shadow presence. I think I understand why he spent the last minutes of each day reading this book.

Browne's Religio Medici is one of the glories of English prose and religious thought. This production is a disgrace. It is not merely that the narrator has an unmistakably non-British accent. That flaw could be forgiven if your budget doesn't permit you to hire any number of British voice actors who could be hired more cheaply than Jeremy Irons. But this narrator seems not to have bothered reading the text before he attempted to narrate it. He stumbles frequently over the ornate phrasings typical of the book. He mis-pronounces words. And when he stumbles, there was no editing out of the attempts. They were all included. If you don't know this book, then listening to the audio won't provide it. If you do know the book you will be offended by this travesty.

Endnotes/footnotes are not formatted properly. They do not display properly, not can one return to the proper place in the text.

Quite heavy going in places but worth the information just going into your sub-conscious, the book was slightly tatty and old but i think it gave it an authentic look.

It's probably better to read a review on 'Religio Medici' by someone who has actually read the book. Contrary to CCEL staff writer Mr. Tim Perrine's introduction in this edition, there is nothing whatsoever 'irreverent' in 'Religio Medici', Browne was a deeply pious person and would be appalled at such claim. Nor can the critical notes possibly explain any of the 'illusions' in the text, they may however assist in understanding some of the text's more obscure ALLUSIONS. Also, refuting the sensationalist claim, many, many books by Protestants, not just R.M. were placed on the Papal Index. Although this edition includes the original paragraph numbering, it also divides the text into 5 fabricated sub-divisions.

I do wish incompetent publishers would stop jumping on the Browne band-wagon (NYRB Greenblatt's utterly ahistorical edition) and publish introductions by those who have read and understood Sir Thomas Browne, Mr. Perrine's introduction is patently cribbed from secondary sources. What is completely unforgivable however is the fact that CCEL, whoever they may be, have not even bothered to check whether all the text is complete. Over 500 words are missing from this edition, including some of the very best lines in the book. Lazy proof-reading. Don't buy.
