- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTough read to follow but rhythmic indeed. Recommend this read for anyone looking to read something different without a specific plot if you will.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDifficult, but worth the effort. Timely, in a strange way.
Oslers shadow presence. I think I understand why he spent the last minutes of each day reading this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2021Format: Audible AudiobookVerified PurchaseBrowne's Religio Medici is one of the glories of English prose and religious thought. This production is a disgrace. It is not merely that the narrator has an unmistakably non-British accent. That flaw could be forgiven if your budget doesn't permit you to hire any number of British voice actors who could be hired more cheaply than Jeremy Irons. But this narrator seems not to have bothered reading the text before he attempted to narrate it. He stumbles frequently over the ornate phrasings typical of the book. He mis-pronounces words. And when he stumbles, there was no editing out of the attempts. They were all included. If you don't know this book, then listening to the audio won't provide it. If you do know the book you will be offended by this travesty.

Quite heavy going in places but worth the information just going into your sub-conscious, the book was slightly tatty and old but i think it gave it an authentic look.

Noverre to goReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 8, 20122.0 out of 5 stars Misapprehended introduction, whole page missing
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt's probably better to read a review on 'Religio Medici' by someone who has actually read the book. Contrary to CCEL staff writer Mr. Tim Perrine's introduction in this edition, there is nothing whatsoever 'irreverent' in 'Religio Medici', Browne was a deeply pious person and would be appalled at such claim. Nor can the critical notes possibly explain any of the 'illusions' in the text, they may however assist in understanding some of the text's more obscure ALLUSIONS. Also, refuting the sensationalist claim, many, many books by Protestants, not just R.M. were placed on the Papal Index. Although this edition includes the original paragraph numbering, it also divides the text into 5 fabricated sub-divisions.
I do wish incompetent publishers would stop jumping on the Browne band-wagon (NYRB Greenblatt's utterly ahistorical edition) and publish introductions by those who have read and understood Sir Thomas Browne, Mr. Perrine's introduction is patently cribbed from secondary sources. What is completely unforgivable however is the fact that CCEL, whoever they may be, have not even bothered to check whether all the text is complete. Over 500 words are missing from this edition, including some of the very best lines in the book. Lazy proof-reading. Don't buy.
