Mattie Carver’s engagement party should have marked the start of her own personal fairy tale. But when her fiancé, Ben, is violently abducted the next morning, her desperate quest to find him rips her away from small-town life and reveals a shattering truth: magic is real—and Ben is hooked. It’s not the stuff of storybooks. It’s wildly addictive, capable of producing everything from hellish anguish to sensual ecstasy almost beyond human endurance.
Determined to find out who took Ben and why, Mattie immerses herself in a shadowy underworld and comes face-to-face with the darkly alluring Asa Ward, a rogue magic dealer, infamous hustler…and her missing fiancé’s estranged brother. Asa has the power to sense magic, and he realizes Mattie is a reliquary, someone with the rare ability to carry magic within her own body, undetected. Asa agrees to help find Ben on one condition: Mattie must use her uncommon talent to assist his smuggling operations. Now, from magic-laced Vegas casinos to the netherworld clubs of Bangkok, Mattie is on a rescue mission. With Asa by her side, she’ll face not only the supernatural forces arrayed against her but the all-too-human temptation that she fears she can’t resist.

“Fine keeps the story moving at a snappy, stylish clip.” —Publishers Weekly
“VERDICT: Mixing mystery with romance, Fine, author of the similarly genre-blended Servants of Fate books, has created an intriguing underworld, where those seeking an enchanting high slip easily into addiction and desperation.” —Library Journal

First: Sarah Fine is really good at writing. I've read many fantasy novels before and many had a great story to tell, but the writer just couldn't get it right. They are shallow, commercial and lack the details, voice and rhythm that develop a good interesting story. This is not the case. This book is mastered in such a way that you get to picture every-single-thing in your mind.
Second: I love that it is fantasy for adults, meaning that is a story with explicit sex and violence scenes. Most magic books I've read are written for children and young adult, meaning they have certain restrain or don't go there at all. And it is ok, they are still good/great/fantastic books. But I found quite enjoyable that this book got sexual tension vibes, that the story was rough, that bad guys where mean, it gave spice to the story.
Third: Characters are human. They do struggle and they do make bad choices. They do dwell in dilemas like a normal person would, they do justify actions that shouldn't be justifiable. They lie to themselves. And maybe you can get angry or exasperated with them for that, but common, wouldn't you have acted the same? Maybe, right? I loved that. I loved that they are full of doubts, self-doubts, and that they judge without knowing. Also, I loved how they evolve throughout the story. Their weaknesses allow them to grow little by little. And that makes it a good story.
So, in conclusion. I really recommend this book (and series) to anyone who likes fantasy and a good adult book.
I have loved everything Sarah Fine has written so it was a no brainer that I had to get my hands on this latest of hers and read it immediately. I was not disappointed in the slightest. This book grabbed me immediately and didn’t let go until the last page. I closed the book and hopped on Amazon to purchase the second book, Splinter available now.
I was so addicted to this book while reading it and I’ve got to admit it’s been hard for me to move on. I got so invested in Mattie and Asa that I was not ready to put them up yet. I loved their dynamic and chemistry. Plus, this book was so much fun and very, very steamy. It was the perfect summer read.
Sure, this book plays on some typical paranormal tropes but Fine’s writing and characters stick out. We did have a love triangle (but I think it was handled well and honestly I hate Ben so I wasn’t bothered). Though there was non stop action I felt that, for me, this book was driven by the characters. They are very complex and not at all good or evil. Ok, some are pretty damn evil. But, the main cast straddle the line of what is right and wrong which makes the reading experience that much more interesting.
I would classify this book as the type of fun had while reading the Sookie Stackhouse books (the first 4) because of the fast pacing and paranormal leaking into the everyday life of a ‘regular’ gal. I love stories where the main character is learning about the world and themselves along with the reader and this is exactly like that. I was just as lost as Mattie when trying to navigate the magical underworld. I felt that not only was Asa leading her on this adventure but me as well.
Final Thoughts:
Reliquary is a perfect read for the urban fantasy/adult paranormal reader. I loved the character dynamic between Mattie and Asa and honestly became incredibly addicted to needing them to be together always, haha. I would say that for any faults this book might have the fast pacing and entertainment value alone make this one to read.

This book had such an original plot to it. Magic being addictive, it took hooked on drugs to a whole new level. And I really liked the parallels it had between real life and fantasy. Just wonderful all the way around.
Now Mattie was a terrible female lead IMO. But I liked her enough to finish the book. Mainly because the plot and supporting characters carried it. You know we love growth and depth of characters but she was about as deep as a puddle folks. So, I read on because I wanted to see how the author would make her grow. She didn’t, at least not enough for me to like her all that much by the end of the book. Her character was a bit flat for me. She was immature, naive and quite boring to be exact.
The real hero of this story is Asa. This is not unusual for me to like the male lead more than the female lead. I am pretty hard on my own sex for some reason. I always end up expecting more from them I guess. Anyway, Asa was the hugest butthead you ever laid eyes on. He was not what I call ‘book’ attractive. He was what you would assume someone looked like who had been rode hard and put away wet if you know what I mean. (and if you don’t, google is a wonderful tool for research) I especially loved how he lived his life. How he was able to be in the magic world, be a part of it yet keep a significant distance from it at the same time. I mean, once you you are an addict, you are always an addict, you just find different coping mechanisms to deal with it. And Asa was the poster child for coping mechanisms. I identified with him so hard! I loved his edginess, how it contrasted with his love for his dog. How he bitched about being a sucker for doing the right thing yet always ended up doing it. He was like the anti-hero! It was just a great book.

The concept of magic as a drug is quite original and interesting. But the book seems a bit formulaic. There has to be a (gratuitous and odd) sex scene, there have to be fights, there has to be a car chase, there has to be an exotic foreign location. I don't know, it just seemed like a paint-by-numbers sort of story with a quite unappealing main character.
