Twelve dates on a dare? What was she thinking? Librarian Claire Harris looks back on the first eleven men as "frogs in the dating pool". Number twelve just might be the prince she's been waiting for - he certainly manages to charm her parents. But following her heart means risk-averse Claire must face her fears and take some life-changing chances.

I thoroughly enjoyed Reluctant Date, especially the powerful sense of place Ms. Claydon deftly creates with each change of locale. Her lush descriptions of Dolphin Key had me feeling the Florida sun on my face and the warm sand between my toes. I'll be re-reading this story next winter when the cold wind blows and there's snow on the roof. It's the perfect escape.

There are interesting parts to the story and a decent cast of characters but The Reluctant Date really didn't end up being what I expected from the blurb. I was expecting something a bit more chicklit-y with the internet-date-a-month-challenge the leading lady Claire has reluctantly taken on, but that is pretty much behind her as much of the story happen after Claire's final date - a date which is a surprise for the leading man Daniel whose brother signed Daniel up for the date.

Since both of the pair aren't really interested in pursuing a relationship and make that clear to the other on their first meeting - and since neither are willing to admit that by the end of the evening that is no longer on the case as both are quite taken with each other - the whole story ends up being a series of misinterpretations by Claire and Daniel of the other's actions and feelings. These misunderstandings serve to keep the pair apart until the absolute end of the story and as such, even though I liked both of the characters, the romance just didn't work for me.

Still, while 'big misunderstanding' as the source of conflict is not a favorite trope for me, if you are looking for an old-school romance, this story is put together well and the author has a decent pedigree - she apparently wrote a lot of romances in the 80's as Anne Beverley.

(One really minor nit that I just have to mention is that the American contingent of the cast use some not so American expressions and terms in their speech as the author is from the UK 'side of the pond'.)

Another beautiful love story from Sheila Claydon, this one taking us from the moors of England to the balmy Florida Keys. On New Year's Eve, Claire Harris makes a resolution to try an Internet dating service for twelve dates. The first eleven aren't what they're cracked up to be and she's just about to give up on #12 when Daniel Marchant walks into her life. Through a series of miscommunications, both Claire and Daniel, smitten with one another, agree to go their separate ways. But Daniel decides Claire would be the perfect employee and persuades her to move to Dolphin Key to work for him on a six month trial basis. Peppered with rich characters and the lush scenery a Sheila Claydon book always promises, Reluctant Date is a must-read!

Both Daniel and Claire are in a rut as far as the whole dating scene goes. Daniel doesn't have time for dating, because he's too busy trying to run the family business, as well as his own. He's also trying his best to hold his family together, after his father has lost his eye sight and his mother starts to sink further and further into a deep depressed state.

His brother who is grateful to Daniel for taking the time and effort to bring him back from the brink of death a little over a year ago, when his parents had abandoned him over his previous career choices. He is now happily married and is expecting his child. Carl wants nothing more than to see his older brother find his own soul mate and to be as happy as he is right now.. So unbeknownst to Daniel, Carl signs him up for a internet dating service. Daniel only learns about his brother's meddling ways right after arriving in London from a long trip. Carl sends him a text message saying that he has a date is waiting for him at a hotel dining room. Being the gentleman he is, Daniel goes to the hotel to meet the woman his brother had set him up with, although he arrives about 15 minutes late.

Claire Harris is badgered into joining a internet dating sight, by her best friend. She reluctantly agrees to twelve dates or twelve months, whichever comes first. At least it would get her friend off her back, or so she hoped anyway. On her final date, she's convinced that all the princes must have already been taken and now only frogs are left in the dating pool. She is so relieved that it's nearly over...that's when she meets Daniel Marchant.

When they first meet face to face that night, Daniel makes it very clear that he's not interested in dating anyone at all.

Ms Claydon has done it again. She has taken the very modern theme of internet dating and melded it with two characters who claim they do not want partners or marriage. That they are both in denial of finding the other attractive becomes even more complex when Claire Harris takes the job offered by Daniel Marchant. The problem for Claire is that the job, while offering everything she has dreamed of, takes her well out of her comfort zone as it means moving to Florida. Daniel has an ulterior motive in hiring Claire. Despite his original protestations, he is more interested in her than her qualifications. This is an intriguing, satisfying story of two people not only coming to terms with falling in love with each other, but coming to terms with their families too.
