That being said, I was highly recommended Reluctant Gods from a close female friend and she's never wrong about what I will like. Suffice to say she was dead-on yet again.
Reluctant Gods starts grabbed me right from the start. Author A.J. Aaron has impressive skills that are, frankly, often lacking here on Amazon. To put it succinctly, he can actually write, and write well. His characters are fully fleshed out (even when they're not in the flesh) and the settings and surroundings came to life in my mind's eye quite vividly.
The story is well put together also. It moves along at a brisk pace but, when necessary, slows down to allow the reader some time to take in the scenery, so to speak. It's a timeless love story with a twist, combining elements of romance, science fiction and wish-fulfillment (with liberal doses of adult-oriented situations thrown in to get the blood flowing, of course).
What it is, if nothing else, is a fun, sexy and surprising tale about 2 broken people separated by time and fate that, miraculously, come back together and heal each other.
What I liked about Reluctant Gods was that it surprised me. It got into my head and left a little something behind that still has me thinking about it a week after I finished reading, and that’s something that very rarely happens with me. Is it my favorite book ever? No, but any writer who laves an image in my mind’s eye for anything longer than a few hours is a writer worth reading, and worth recommending.
Which is what I’m here to do. Read Reluctant Gods. It will surprise you, put a smile on your face, a tingle in your heart and leave a little mark on your soul. Highly recommended.
The first chapter immediately grabbed my attention because it begins with engineer Sevilin Decarain entering Ninee Aysel’s mansion to see what he expects to be his 106-year-old great grandmother. Instead, she looks around forty. It’s a shock to him, and she explains that she could have looked younger but didn’t want to surprise him too much. Aysel then cuts him in on a little secret by showing him a painting of what could have been his identical twin, so similar is the face. His name is also Sevilin, and this is due to the fact that Aysel needed a marker to be certain that the young man she watched from youth to adulthood was indeed the right man to learn the secrets of the gods. For you see Sevilin is a very old spirit indeed.
In fact, his spirit is destined to reunite with the spirit of his old love. This spirit can be found in Leyna DiAmore, a woman who has become bored with life. In her first chapter, chapter two, we learn she has slept with 27 men, and none have meant a thing to her. It’s obvious she is missing something or someone. The author paints a very vivid picture of her dim view on life, especially in the way she threatens to send her lover’s wife a naughty videotape just to create chaos. She remarks how disappointed she is the lover was tossed from his house several months ago because destroying his life would have been fun.
When Aysel dies, Sevilin inherits the title the “Designated One” and billions of dollars. He also learns he has little time to meet and save his soul mate before she dies. The two are truly an odd couple as far as personalities go, and it is interesting to see their relationship develop and flourish.
The story is filled with romance, action and suspense and everything I enjoy in a book. There is time travel, archangels, and so much more to keep you reading away the hours. The author does an extremely good job of plotting the tale, keeping it suspenseful throughout, and developing unique characters you won’t find in other books. I will be reading more A.J. Aaron titles.
This was a very interesting read. The surprise of Sevilen becoming a god reminded me a little of the Harry Potter books, when Harry found out he was a wizard in the first book. I enjoy these types of stories: Stories where the protagonist is thrust into a life that he had no idea was even there, but he was always destined to inherit, and having to deal with that. I really liked the science fiction portions of this book (which was around 90% of it), but I also enjoyed the romance between Sevilen and Leyna. It added to the story, without overpowering everything, and morphing the entire book into a sci-fi romance novel.
Overall, it was a very different read for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Plus, it’s free! You should definitely check it out.
