Even though this book is set in the Charleston, South Carolina area, I went so far as to move to Natchez, Mississippi for three months. I had friends there who helped me find a house to rent while I absorbed all I immersed myself in the local culture and visited museums. I even worked for a seamstress while I was there...one who specialized in making antebellum costumes for the locals for tours every year. It was quite an education, and one I'm thrilled to have experienced.
You see, history has always fascinated me, and I had long ago fallen in love with that era. Movies like Gone With the Wind, and Patrick Swayze's North and South were longtime favorites, and I knew that someday I would write a book set in that period. It would, of course, include the pretty dresses, and suave, handsome heroes...but not the Civil War. It would also have to express my distaste for slavery.
So with those guidelines in mind, I started asking the 'what ifs.' What if you lost everything? Your home, your parents, even your fiance. What if you had nothing but your brother? And what if your long lost grandfather, a man who disowned his son long before you were born, suddenly left you the family estate in his will?
That seemed like a fairly good beginning for a story, except I wasn't writing a fairytale. There needed to be more. So I asked a few more questions. What if the grandfather only left it to you because he set things up so you would lose it anyway? And to complicate it a little more, what if his sworn enemy was brought into the mess?
And so Reluctant Guardian was born.
